Standards

         5. Career Information and Career Goals
         6. Knowledge and Skills to Achieve Career Goals

5.3 Recognize the job tasks of school personnel and community workers.
6.2 Practice listening and working in teams.
6.4 Discuss how school habits relate to job habits.

General Approach

The general approach is that children will use their imagination with the help of a picture to visualize the work places they might see in the Knoxville region. This will be followed by a counselor lead discussion.

Activity Steps

1. Give the printed activity to each student.
2. Give the picture of Buzzy and Emily to each student.
3. Have the children sit down and imagine the different jobs they could see.
4. Have the children write the names of three places they saw on the picture.
Explain that they have a choice of drawing a sketch of what they saw on the
    back of the picture.
5. Gather the children in a circle.

Lead the children through a discussion:

You will be exploring work places with the help of Emily the eagle andBuzzythe bee. Together they work as a team. Emily takes them to their destination, because she can travel great distances over the Knoxville region. Eagles are strong birds of flight, so this team will have the opportunity to see a broad range of work environments such as the Smoky Mountains, Dollywood, and the University of Tennessee. They could see a park ranger, a singer, anda footballcoach working at theselocations. Buzzy is able to explore the work environment. As a bee, Buzzyis able to hide and enter the work place undetected. He can now listen closely and see exactly what happens in that environment. What information might this team reportto youabout the work they saw.

After the students have written the names of three work places, ask each child to tell the other children what they wrote. Ask the children the following questions:

    1. Who works at this place?
     2. What do they do?
     3. Would you like this job? Why or why not?
     4. What do the workers talk about?
     5. Can you name a job where it is important to study the behaviors of
         people or animals?
     6. Buzzy and Emily were a team. Can you think of a job that might require
         team work.
