  Standards

Learning Expectations

This activity will help the student acquire competencies which
 relate to the following standards:

4   Career awareness and employment readiness skills

The student will:

4.4  Discuss the importance of responsibility, dependability, punctuality, positive attitude, integrity, and school performance.

4.5  Develop skills to interact and work co-operatively with different people.

General Approach

The general approach is that the students will participate in an activity that will introduce them to the process of making appointments.  This will help them to begin to understand the importance of managing their time.

Activity Steps

Step 1:
Give the students a copy of the “clock worksheet” from the website.  Outside of the clock, beside EACH number
(i.e.. 12:00, 1:00, 2:00, etc.), draw a line.  Make enough copies for each student.

Step 2:
Talk to the students about what does it mean to have an appointment.  Generate a short discussion.  After this, pass out a clock to each student.  You may want to participate, as well.

Step 3:
Have the students go around to other students and make appointments with each other.  Fill up all of his/her time slots.  Write the name of your appointment on the line beside that time.  Only one appointment per person and one appointment at a time.  Give the students 5-10 minutes to set the appointments.  Call for students to stop.

Step 4:
Starting with 12:00, have the students get together with his/her appointment.  At each appointment time, have the students do something fun.  Examples:
1) tell about something fun you did
2) tell about a bad dream
3) play rock, paper scissors
4) tell about a time you were embarrassed
5) thumb wrestle
6) hop on one foot
7) tell about a fun vacation
8) tell about favorite food
9) tell a fun place to go
10)tell something about your family or pet

* Limit each "appointment" to approximately 3 minutes.  Encourage students to be quick and let the other person talk too.

Step 5:
Discuss with the students what their reactions were to the exercise.  Point out that it can be harder to make appointments because someone may already have an appointment at that time.

Step 6:
Discuss the importance of making and keeping appointments.  Point out that people will not trust you or want to make an appointment with you if you do not show up and be on time for your appointments.

* Discuss with the students that this is why it is very important that we use our time wisely.

Time Required

Total Time Required is approximately 40 minutes.

Resources Needed

Materials:
1) Copy of Clock Worksheet for each student (click on “clocks” from website’s main page).
2) Pencil to write names for appointments (they may have
     these in the classroom)

Performance Indicators

Students will be able to:

       1. have a better understanding of how everyone's time is
important and that we must be responsible and
           dependable.

       2. have a better appreciation of differences in the ways
           that people spend their time.
