General Approach

The general approach is that students will discuss the steps that have led to their past successes, identify a current goal, separate into groups of two, trace their shoe, & fill in the outline with steps to achieving a current goal. They will also trade worksheets with their partner & add steps to his/her outline. Everyone will then gather to share their steps.

  • Gather students in a circle and lead them in the following discussion:
Have you ever been asked to do a job, complete a task, etc. that you didn't know how to do? How did this turn out? Were you able to do it?  I'll bet it was really hard! Tell me about a time when you were asked to do something that you could do very well. What was that like? How did you get to be so good at it? (Did someone teach you, learned it from a book, watched a friend do it first, etc.)  Wouldn't it be easier if when a person asked you to do something you could just push a button on yourself and magically have that ability? (Ask them what "button" they wish they had). It's too bad but we weren't made with those buttons! Instead we have to work hard to make the steps towards what we want to do.

  • Ask the students to think about a current work or school related goal that they wish to achieve (or improve upon). Let them share these goals with the group.
  • Ask them to think of a few steps, however small, they could make that would help them get closer to their goal. Encourage them to remember what has worked for them in the past in constructing their new steps.
  • Separate students into groups of two.
  • Hand out markers/crayons so that students may decorate their "steps." Help & supervise as each child traces his or her shoe onto the worksheet then fills in the outline with their "steps."
  • Direct each child to trade "steps" with their partner. Ask the partner to add one or more steps that may not have occurred to his or her partner.
  • Gather the students back together and let them share the steps they & their partner created towards achieving their goal.
  • Encourage them to display their steps as a reminder at home or in the classroom.
