Activity Steps

  • allow students to share stories
  • tell students that one of the most important parts of solving problems is selecting a good solution
  • give a pretend scenario to students regarding some type of a problem
  • have the class brainstorm different solutions for the problem mentioned above
  • divide the students into four groups
  • tell the students they will no longer be students rather a solution machine
  • assign on question to each group or part of the machine,
  • the questions are:
      Is it safe?
          Is it fair?
         Will it make others happy?
         Will it work?
  • run the solution through the solution machine by going to each group and asking the assigned question from above.
  • if the answers are "yes" to all the solution is accepted by each part of the machine
  • if the answers are "no" then the machine rejects the solution
  • discuss the lesson with the students, talking about the importance of brainstorming and finding effective solutions
