Learning Expectations


This activity will help students acquire competencies which relate to the following standards:
9.  Acquire personal safety skills
The student will:
9.2  Investigate school and community resources for assistance with personal concerns 9.4  Utilize skills to recognize, report, and protect against threats to personal safety

General Approach

The general approach is that students will talk about members in the community whose main job is safety.  The students will then pair up and search the world wide web and explore the chosen occupation.

Activity Steps

  • The group director should initiate a discussion about members in the community who help people feel safe (policeman, fireman, counselor, etc.)
  • After briefly discussing these occupations, put the students in groups of two or three.
  • Allow the students to search the world wide web for information about the chosen occupation.
  • After the groups are finished, allow them to share with the other members of the class what they have learned.

Time Required

This activity will take approximately 45 minutes to an hour.

Resources Needed

  • Computers with access to the World Wide Web
  • Pen/pencil
  • Paper

Performance Indicators

Upon completion of the activity, the students should know the occupations of several community resource people.
