Standards
|
This activity will help students acquire competencies
which relate to the following standard:
1.0 Skills for Academic Self-Confidence, Learning and SuccessThe student will: 1.8 develop a broad range of interest and abilities. |
General Approach |
During this activity, the students will be lead to write down things they have experience in including their education, jobs, and extra activities involved with school. They will then be shown examples of résumé’s and told to write their own resume’. |
Activity Steps |
1. Explain to students the importance
of writing an excellent résumé. Ask students to discuss the
different impressions a résumé can make upon a potential
employer, depending on how well it is written. Show a sample résumé
to students (preferably one for a recent high school or college graduate)
and discuss format, word choice, sentence structure, and so on
2. Give each student a copy of the "student activity sheet" (found below). Explain to students that they are going to take notes and transform their notes into a résumé. Tell students that the purpose of writing a résumé is to get a job and therefore the audience is the potential employer. Tell them to write their résumé as if they were applying for a paid summer intern position in a field that they someday hope to enter. 3. Guide students as they are taking notes for their résumé. Explain that the objective should be concise and can be a phrase. Tell students that under "Education" they should state the grade they are in, but they should also highlight any courses they have taken that are relevant to the internship. Students should also highlight any courses they've done well in. Under "Work Experience," students can list any jobs they've had or have as well as volunteer work they've done, including the dates (month and year). Under "Extracurricular Activities," have students write about clubs they're in, sports they play, etc. 4. Have students use a word processor (in school or as homework) to transform their notes into a professional-looking résumé. Have students peer-edit one another's résumés. Provide a resume' template for them to follow that would be acceptable in most areas. |
