Our Helpers

Standards

Learning Expectations

This activity will help students acquire competencies which relate to the following standards:

9.0 Acquire personal safety skills.

The student will:

9.2 Identify community helpers
9.4 Identify threats to personal safety

General Approach

The general approach is that students will color different community helpers that will be followed by a counselor led discussion on safety.

Activity Steps

  • Print out  pictures of different community helpers for the students (choose from the coloring pages listed for dental, doctor, fire safety, and family).  Ask students to color the pictures.
  • Gather students in a circle for a group discussion.

Lead students through a discussion:

There are many people in our community who are helpers.  Some help us when we are scared.  Some help us when we are sick.  Some help us when we are hurt.  Some help us when we are sad.  Let's talk about each of the pictures we have colored.

Use the following "leads" and wait for their response:

  • If we were sick, who would we go see?
  • If we had a fire in our house, who would help us?
  • If we were sad or mad at school, who would we talk to?
  • If we were at the store and a stranger tried to hurt us, who could we call?

The counselor can talk about many other safety situations.  There can be more than one answer.  Emphasize personal safety and that it is okay to seek help from our community helpers.  The counselor will discuss how following rules ensures safety of self and others.

Time required

This activity may require two 30-40 minute sessions.  The first session can be used for coloring pictures and the second session can be used for discussion if needed.

Resources Needed

  • Different pictures of community helpers for each student.  Some recommended are police officer, fireman, doctor, teacher, counselor, and nurse.  Many pictures can be found "safety" coloring books found at the local book store.
  • Colored pencils or crayons

Performance Indicators

Students will be able to:

  • State ways to obtain help in emergency situations
  • Explain how following rules ensures safety of self and others.
