This activity will help students acquire competencies which relate to the following standards:

The student will:

          5.2  Identify jobs of workers in the community
          5.3  Recognize the job tasks of school personnel and community workers
          6.2  Practice listening and working together in teams
          6.3  Demonstrate conflict management skills with peers and adults

General Approach

Students will work together in teams cutting and gluing pictures of people they deem to be in various employment positions.  This will be followed by a counselor led discussion.

Activity Steps

          1.  Explain that students will work in teams of 4 to 5 cutting out pictures of people that are in various work uniforms or appear to be in a specific job.
          2.  Give each student a set of scissors and various magazines and newspapers.
          3.  Have the students glue the pictures that they have cut out onto a large piece of poster board.
          4.  Gather children in a circle and lead them through a discussion about the pictures they have found and what type of work the people appear to be doing.

Time Required

This activity will require at least 20 minutes for the children to complete the hands-on portion of the activity.  Another 20 minutes may be required to discuss the activity after the poster boards are completed.

Resources Needed

          1.  4-5 poster boards
          2.  blunt scissors and glue
          3.  various magazines and newspapers
