General Approach

The general approach is that the children will split into two teams and play a game of "memory" involving pictures of workers within the community.  As the children uncover the cards the counselorwill lead a short discussion about the profession and ask the children questions.

Activity Steps

    1.  The counselor will print out pictures of workers within the community, cut    them into equally sized card-shaped squares, and laminate them.  This will be     the deck of memory cards, and can be reused again and again.
    2.   The counselor will spread the cards out, face down, into five rows and four  columns.
    3.   Split the children into two teams and have them gather around the cards.

Explain to the children how the game will work:

Today we will be playing a game of memory, just like some of you might have at home.  Only this deck of cards is special because it has pictures of people who help us in our community.  Within your teams your challenge is to make the most matches.  Everyone will get a turn, but it is very important to pay attention even when it is not your turn so that you can remember where all of the cards are!

As the children uncover the cards, initiate questions about each of the occupations.  For example:

Look, Joe has uncovered a musician who plays the saxophone.  Other than the saxophone, what otherinsrument might a musician play?

-or-

Look,  Beth uncovered a custodian.  What types of jobs around the school might a custodian do?

Emphasize that certain jobs require people to pay very close attention or to work as a team, just like they are doing right now.
