General
Approach

The general approach is for students to use personal information to create a book that will explore making a new friend.

Activity
Steps

 Session 1:

 1. Go to the following web site:
  http://www.tolerance.org/pt/new_friend/index_friend.html

When you have accessed this web site, click on start and enter personal information.

 2. Each student will need to have access to a computer for approximately 5 minutes to input his/her personal information to personalize the story.
 3. Print the story using your computer's printer.
 4. Color the story's illustrations using crayons or markers.

* Note: In Session 1, the students may not have enough time to finish coloring the pages.  If this is the case, begin with completing the coloring of the book in Session 2.

 Session 2:

 5. Using a three-hole punch, make holes along the sides of the
     construction paper and cardboard pieces.
 6. Assemble your book's cover page.  Using child-safe scissors,
cut the cover image and text out of the page that your computer
printed.  Glue the image and text on one side of your pieces of
cardboard.  Make sure the holes on the cardboard are on the
     left-hand side.
 7. Assemble your book's pages.  Using child-safe scissors, cut out
each page's illustration and text and glue them onto a piece of
construction paper.  Make sure the holes on the construction
paper are on the left-hand side.  Keep the pages in order; you
can use the page numbers as a guide.
 8. Assemble your book.  Place your cover page and the inside
pages in order.  Put the remaining piece of cardboard behind
the book's last page.  Align the pages' holes.  Thread the string
through each of the holes and tie a bow with "wiggle room"
     for turning the pages!
 9. Read your book, share it with your family and friends and then
store it on a shelf or in your desk.  Read and share it again!

 Session 3:

This session will be necessary if coloring the pages of the book is necessary in Session 2.
