Expectations

This activity will help students acquire cometencies which relate to the following standards::
6. Knowledge and Skills to achieve career Goals
The student will:
6.6 Use technology and other sources to identify personal likes and dislik

General Approach
The general approach is that the counselor will lead the students in a discussion of likes and dislikes.  Students will then identify animated objects and choose whether or not he/she likes that object through a computer-based activity.

Activity Steps
Lead the students through a discussion of choices:

We all come across animals, foods, and other objects every day.  Some of us like dogs, and some of us do not.  Some of us like pizza and some of us do not.  Raise your hand if you know what a banana is.  Raise your hand if you like bananas.  Raise your hand if you do not like bananas.  Even though we can all identify a banana, some of us like it and some of us do not.

Place each student at a computer bookmarked to the page: http://funbrain.familyeducation.com/cgi-bin/vo.cgi?A1=s&A2=alph1&COBR=2

Tell the students that they are to click on the name of the object that they see.  After each student clicks the first object, ask: "Ok, students.  What was the first object?"  If they answer correctly, ask:  "Who likes these?"  Then ask, "Who doesn't like these?"

Repeat this for each object.  When the activity is over, ask the students, "What is daily living?  Were the objects we saw today a part of daily living?  Is it important to know the names of the objects we saw today even though not everybody liked each one?"

Time Required
This activity will take approximately 45 minutes.

Resources Needed
Computers with access to: http://funbrain.familyeducation.com/cgi-bin.vo.cgi?A1=s&A2=alph1&COBR=2

Performance Indicators
The students will learn from discussion and technology that decisions are made in daily living about likes and dislikes.  The counselor will evaluate students' identification skills by the computer-based activity score, and the counselor will evaluate the students' awareness of likes and dislikes by responses to questions.
