This activity will help students acquire competencies whcih relate to the folowing standards:

The students will:

4.1 describe personal ablilites, work habits, interests and skills, and
      reltate them to individual career intrests
4.3 formlate skills to locate, evaluate, and interepret career information
5.2 explore career clusters
6.6 use technology ans other sources to relate personal interests and
      qualities to a variety of careers

General
Approach

Children working in pairs will interact with a WWW site according to directions on a worksheet.  Pages printed from the site will be used to familiarize each student with information on a career of his/her choosing.

Activity
Steps

  • Lead students in discussion of academic interests and how those interests can correlate with career interests. 
  • Explain that students will work in pairs exploring careers on the internet, based on favorite school subjects.
  • Distribute the Jobs for Kids Who Like... activity worksheet.
  • Open the following WWW address:
     http://stats.bls.gov/k12/html/edu_over.htm
  • Have students follow directions on the worksheet, Jobs for Kids Who Like...
  • Worksheets and printouts may be placed in each student's portfolio upon completion of activity.

Time Required

This activity will require about 10 minutes for discussion, about 20 minutes of computer time, and about 10 minutes to read material printed and consider answers to questions.  Follow-up discussion of chosen career for each child can take place in a second session if desired.
