which relate to the following standards:
5. Career Information and Career Goals The student will: 5.2
Identify jobs of workers in the community
|
General Approach
|
The general approach is that children will choose and color a picture of an object or tool. The children will then be given a secret picture to wear on their back and the group will give them hints about jobs that could go with that object, until the child guesses the object. The counselor will lead a discussion on job variety and the necessity for variety. |
Activity Steps
|
1. Print large templates of a variety of tools/objects
that would be used or encountered in a workplace.
2. Give each student one picture to color. 3. Under close supervision, have children cut a 12" piece of yarn/string and paper punch two holes at top of their pictures. Help children tie ribbon through holes. 4. Have students gather into a circle. 5. Shuffle pictures and give each student one picture to "wear" on their back (so they can't see it). 6. Bring one child at a time to the front of the group to receive hints about what jobs might go with their picture. When the child guesses correctly, allow the child to turn the picture around and wear it on the front of their shirt. Lead children through a discussion about the variety of jobs/careers available and the need for each career. |
Time Required
|
This activity may require two 20 minute sessions, depending on the number of students participating. Two smaller groups could work and be supervised at the same time and then combine for the discussion, thereby decreasing the time needed. |
