6.2 demonstrate cooperation as a team member.
6.4 relate school/work habits to future job performance

General
Approach

Each group will use the assembly line approach to create greeting cards.  Every student will perform a specialized task.  At the end of the activity, each student will have a greeting card to take home.

Activity Steps
Divide the class into three groups.  Let each group member choose a task to complete.  Tasks are as follows:
*one student hands out the materials to each other group member
*one student colors the daisy flowers and stems
*one student cuts out the flowers
*one student tapes the flowers to the cards
*one student writes a greeting on the card
*one student passes out the cards so each member in the group gets one

When everyone has a greeting card, engage the students in the following large group discussion:
*How did you decide what task you would do in your group?
*Did you enjoy the task you were assigned?  Why or why not?
*Were there any tasks that only boys could do, or that only girls could do?
*What would happen if somebody in your group didn't do their job correctly?
*Many jobs require people to work together to complete a task.  What have you learned that is important to do when you are working in a group?
*Do you think that if we made greeting cards tomorrow, you would want to do the same task you did today, or could you do a task that somebody else did today?

Time Required
This activity will require 15-20 mins. for each group to create their greeting cards, and 15-20 minutes for follow-up discussion.

Resources Needed
Three envelopes, each containing:
*3X5 cards for each student in the group
*enough paper daisies for each card
*colored pencils, crayons or felt pens
*one pair of scissors
*tape

Performance
Indicators
Students will contribute their ideas about the importance of personal responsibility on the job, good work habits, and the importance of cooperation among workers to accomplish a task.  The group can brainstorm about other things that are created on an assembly line.  As a review the next day, the students can discuss the pros and cons of working on an assembly line, and the pros and cons of buying something created on an assembly line.
