General
Approach
Each student will go to a website that describes Lost Maple
State Park.  The students will read about the park then discuss
with the counselor occupations which may be associated with
parks and/or the outdoors.

Activity Steps
  •  Explain to the students that they will be reading information on a website that describes a state park.
  • Ask the students to keep in mind what sorts of jobs one might do outdoors or in a park while reading the information on the website.
  • Open the following WWW address:
                   http://www.osweb.com/kidzkorner/places.htm

Lead the class in a discussion by asking the following questions:

  • Who might work in a park or outdoors?  Scientists?  Park Rangers? Loggers?
  • How many of you like the outdoors?  Can you think of reasons why someone might want to work outdoors?
  • Can you think of anything one might have to be good at in order to work outdoors?
  • Who works outdoors?  Men?  Can women work outdoors, too?

Time Required
This activity will require 45 minutes to complete.  Allow the students 15 minutes to locate and read the website.  30 minutes should then be designated for discussion.

Resources Needed
  • The following WWW address:
            http://www.osweb.com/kidzkorner/places.htm

Performance
Indicators
Performance will be evaluated by noting the awareness level of the students regarding outdoors occupations following participation by the students in the activity steps and subsequent class discussion.  Students should be able to list occupations suited for the outdoors as well as describe their interest or lack thereof and how this might affect their decisions to work outdoors.  Students should also note any abilities they may have that may be related to their interest in the outdoors.  The goal here should be to help raise the students' awareness of their abilities and interests which may assist them in making better informed career decisions in the future.  Gender stereotyping should be a significant topic of discussion and every effort should be made by the counselor to help raise students' awareness of the ability of men and women to perform equally successfully in outdoors occupations.
