This activity will help students acquire competencies which relate to the following standard:

General Approach

The general approach is that students will go through a decision making process using guideline information from the WWW to set personal goals or group goals and formulate a plan to achieve them.

Activity Steps

  • Explain to students that they will be given an opportunity to use the WWW to access the process guidelines for goal setting or hand out printed information if web access is unavailable.
  • According to class demands, students may work in groups of 3-5 on a class project or individually to set personal goals.  Explain the purpose of the exercise is to learn how to set goals and make a plan to achieve them.
  • Students will need a "setting goals /making a schedule" worksheet as well as, their own pencil and paper.
  • Locate the following WWW address:  http://www.bigchalk.com
  • Instruct students to follow  instructions.

  • Click "Productive Thinking" Students should read this page.
  • Click "Goal Setting" Students should read and complete the activity on this page.
  • Click "Setting Goals" Students may complete this worksheet or provide a written description of their goals and action plan.

Time Required

This activity could take 1-2 hours depending on whether it is used for individuals or small groups.  Allow time to organize groups (5-10min), read the material (10-20min), brainstorm for ideas (15-20min), select appropriate goals (5min), develop ideas to meet goals (5-10min), and complete the worksheet or prepare a brief written description of their plan (20min).

Performance
Indicators

Students should be able to set short term and long term goals, as well as, develop a plan to achieve those goals.  Students should present a brief written description of 2-6 goals including some ideas for successfully meeting them or complete the "setting goals/making a schedule" worksheet.
