Finding A Job

This activity will help students acquire competencies which relate to the following standard: 
5.0 Career Information and Career Goals 
The student will:
5.2 identify skills that are transferable from one occupation to another.
5.3 apply technology and other research skills to locate information about job and post secondary education.

General Approach

The general approach is that students will be able to use both the Internet and the newspaper to locate job 
openings in specific categories.

Activity Steps

Provide students with access to the Internet site:  http://www.ajb.org
Explain to students that they must use the site to locate specific job openings.
Hand out "Finding A Job" worksheet.
Explain to students the regional availability of certain
jobs at certain times, include the possibilities of moving
for the purpose of allowing future plans.
Allow students access to newspaper classifieds upon completing the Internet portion of the activity.

Time Required

The time required for this activity is minimal.  At most, 30-45 minutes for the entire activity and discussion.

    1.  Locate America's Job Bank at http://www.ajb.org
         How many jobs are currently posted on this site?  __________________

    2.  Type in the zip code for the nearest large city (i.e. Knoxville, Nashville,
         Atlanta)
         Next, click on "Select Job Title"
         Then, select two job categories you find most interesting.

         Expand each category and list each sub category

         Click on the job titles to find job listings that might interest you.
         Write the title, education, and experience requirements necessary for the 
         three jobs that interest you most.

    3.  Return to the "HOME" page.
         Use the "Zip Code Finder" to locate the zip code for another city of your 
         choice.

    4.  Now, look in the classified section of the newspaper (supplied by teacher).
