This activity will help students acquire competencies which relate to the following standard:
5.0 Career Information and Career Goals 
The student will: 
5.2 identify skills that are transferable from one occupation to another. 

General Approach

The general approach is that students will look at the College Net web site.  They will get online and look at several different colleges that might interest them within their future.  Each student will answer the questions on the web site and try to find the best school to match their interests and abilities.

Activity Steps

  • Write on a board the web site for CollegeNet.
  • Ask each student to get into the web site on their computer but to wait before going further.  Some students may need help with this entering into the computer.  The teacher or counselor should make sure that all students are ready for the activity and that everyone is in on the internet. 
  • Ask each student once they are in the web site to please follow the directions given to them on the handout.
  • Tell the student's the following:.
Today we are going to go into the College Net web site and look up colleges that you think you might want to attend within your future.  Please select a college that interests you and please follow that instructions provided to you on the web site.

After each student finishes his or her college search have students write down answers to the following questions and then answer these questions within a group setting: 

  • Which college did you select?
  • What did you like best about this college?
  • What did you not like at all about this college?
  • What did I learn about this college that made me want to attend? 
  • What did I learn about this college that made me want to search for another school?

 

Time Required
This activity may require two 30 minute sessions.  Students will need at least one entire session to make sure that they can get into the computer correctly and that they have time to finish their questions.  A second 30 minute session is needed to discuss the job selections in the small group setting.

Indicators
During this discussion the counselor will write down all the colleges that the students discuss.  The counselor will then discuss the interests of the students and why the student selected the college that he or she selected.  Each student will discuss there questions with the class and the students will tell which college that they think they would like best.
