This activity will help students acquire competencies which relate to the following standards:
4. Career awareness and employment readiness skills
The student will:

General 
Approach

The general approach is that students will be led by the counselor to discuss and brainstorm about defining and building a resume.

Activity Steps

  • Have students define "talents" (special strengths or abilities). Discuss in class and list those suggestions by students on the board. 
  • Have students fill out "What Is Your Talent" handout.
  • Have students define "resume" (short list of your education, talents, and experience sent to possible employers). Discuss in class by asking students following question: What do you think should be included on a resume? Why?
  • Explain to students they are now going to an example of a resume listed on the Web. Have students go to following Web site and find answers to questions on the "Sue Trex Resume" handout:
  • Explain to students they now are going to create their own resume. Instruct students to find the following Web site:

  • Instruct students to print out their resume when finished.

Time Required

This activity will require approximately three 30 minute sessions. Handouts can be prepared by counselor before class.

During the end discussion, students will discuss what talents might be necessary for certain careers. Counselor will list careers on board then list talents needed under each as expressed by students.
