Community Helpers

Learning Expectations

This activity will help students acquire competencies which relate to the following standards:

     9.0     Acquire Personal Safety Skills
 
 

The student will:

     9.2     Identify resource people in the school and community and
               know how and when to seek help
     9.4     Recognize threats to personal safety

 


General Approach
The general approach is that children will work a puzzle relating to community helpers.  This will be followed by a counselor led discussion.

Activity Steps
Introduce the concept of community helpers by discussing people in the community whose job is one of helping others.  Have the class talk about what each of these helpers do in their jobs. 

Have the students connect to:

Have the students complete the crossword puzzle and print it out when completed.  When completed, talk to the class again about how each of these community helpers help people.  Present situations of children in need of help.  Ask the students to tell which community helper the child should go to for help.


Time Required
This activity will take about 45 minutes:  10 minutes for the first class discussion, 20 minutes for the crossword puzzle, and 15 minutes for the follow-up discussion

For this activity, each student will need to have access to a computer with World Wide Web access.  The computers should be book marked to http://www.mcgruff.org/10act8.htm.

Performance Indicators
Following this activity the students should be able to identify school and community helpers.  They should be able to identify what each helper does for a child in need of help.
