Activity Steps

1.  Give each student a white piece of paper, crayons, scissors, tape, and string.
2.  Instruct the students to draw and color the face of a community worker or school personnel.  The students need to make the mask close to actual size.
3.  Under close supervision, have students cut out the faces with blunt scissors.  Be sure to discuss safety precautions pertaining to scissor use.
4.  Instruct students to tape each string to the side edge of the mask.
5.  Take up the community workers when students are finished.
6.  Have students sit in a circle.

Lead students through the following:

Each of the people you have drawn have special jobs they do in our community.  We have been studying about these special jobs and today we are going to play a game using what we have learned about our community workers.  I am going to ask a volunteer to come up and close their eyes.  I will put a mask on the volunteer.  The rest of the class will give clues and the volunteer will use these clues to guess which community worker mask he or she has on.  We will only give three clues to each volunteer.  Are there any questions?

7.  Have volunteers come up individually.  Have each volunteer close his or her eyes while one of the community worker masks is placed onto his or her face.
8.  Students in the circle must give the volunteer three clues as to which community helper mask they are wearing.  The volunteer must guess which community helper they are.

After all of the volunteers have participated, ask the following questions for discussion:

1.  Are there any other special jobs that our community members do?
2.  What jobs do you see your parents doing in our community?
3.  What jobs do you see your parents doing in your home?
