Choosing A Career

This activity will help kindergarten students acquire competencies which relate to the following standards:

This activity will help kindergarten students meet the following learning expectations:
4.1 describe personal abilities, work habits and interest 
4.3 practice making decisions
4.5 develop skill to interact and work cooperatively with different people
5.2 identify jobs of workers in the community. 
KINDERGARTNER

General Approach

The general approach is that children will be given the  letter of the alphabet and pictures of  jobs. 
Then they will pick occupation they  like the best and tell why they like it 
The students will be asked to  arrange the letters and jobs in alphabetical order.

Activity Steps

After the students are given four (number may vary) cutouts of various occupations and matching alphabetic character:
  • have the students identify the individual letters beginning with "A".
  • discuss with the children the career occupations on the reverse side of the teachers set.
  • have the children pick out the job they like the best and discuss why they picked that job 
  • have the children match the occupations with the letter of the alphabet.
  • review their work
  • have the students place the letters and occupations in alphabetical order.
  • review and reward their work

Time Required

This activity may require 20 to 30 minutes per session.

It will require more than one session to cover all the alphabet. (It nay take as many as six sessions covering an average of four letters per session.)

Resources Needed

  • One double sided sets of occupational pictures for the teacher to use (one side has an occupation that begins with the letter of the alphabet on the other side).
  • Four flash cards with alphabet characters (Aa - Zz) for students to use.
  • Four flash cards with occupational pictures that correlate to the alphabetic letter per student.
  • Stickers to reward each student for their success.

Students should be able to identify the letters of the alphabet as a team.

Students should be able to identify the occupational character.

Students should be able to match the characters to the letter of the alphabet.

Students should be able to put  the alpha characters in alphabetical order.
