Learning Expectations

This activity will help students acquire competencies which relate to the following standards:

4. Career awareness and employment readiness skills

The student will:

4.1 Demonstrate awareness of personal abilities, work habits, skills, and interests
4.2 Locate, evaluate, and utilize skills to interpret career information based on interests


General Approach

The general approach is the students will utilize a web site to explore careers that may interest them. After exploring the web site, the students will be led in a discussion.

Activity Steps

1. Check to make sure the site is up and running.
2. Gather the students for a brief introduction before beginning the activity.

Discussion

Today we are going to explore different areas that you may want to work in when you grow up. We are going to look at a web site that has several careers placed into 6 different categories. We should have time for you to look up as many careers as you want to today. Under the categories are lots of  different kinds of information like salary, education required, and what the job consists of.  Have fun!

3. Have the students open the www address

4. Let the students explore the career while helping them with any technical problems that may arise.
5. Lead the students in a discussion about what careers they found and what interested them most about them. 

Lead suggestions:

What types of careers did you find? Were there any specific careers that you found? What did you like about the career? What didn't you like? Did you notice how much education is involved for you career?


Time Required

This activity will require 40-45 minutes for the web site search and the discussion.
