This activity will help students meet the following learning expectations:

General Approach


The general approach is that children will utilize online sources to identify career interests and participate in a job shadowing experience.  This will be followed by a counselor-led discussion. 

Activity Steps

  • Print career interests worksheet for each student.
  • Provide each student with worksheet and ensure that they have a writing utensil.
  • Explain to students that they will be using an online resource to complete their worksheets. 
  • Provide students with the following web address: https://secure.ncmentor.org/CareerMatch/
  • Have students use the above online career resource and research three career pathways of interest to complete their worksheets.
  • Provide students with the following web address that exposes them to virtual job shadowing of different occupations: http://www.jobshadow.monster.com/
  • Help the students navigate the virtual job shadowing website, along with directing them to some useful personal interests and abilities links under the Your Career tab in this website.
  • Have students share their findings in a group with each other.  Follow up with the students about other resources to gather pertinent career information.

Time Required

This activity may require two 30-minute sessions.  The children can utilized the online career resources worksheet activity in the first session, and participate in the job shadowing online resource in the second session.  Children may need assistance in navigating the website.

During this activity, the student will be able to use technology to explore a variety of career clusters, explore interests, hobbies, and various occupations, and determine how personal interests and abilities relate to career choices.  The student will also be able to assess work based readiness skills through virtual job shadowing.
