Standards

Learning Expectations

This activity will help students acquire competencies which relate to the following standards:
5. Career information and career goals
The student will:
5.6  Analyze the education and training required to achieve career goals

General Approach
The general approach is that students will visit the Career Ship web site and look up occupations that they are interested in to gain knowledge regarding what the career entails, expected salary, where they may work, what kinds of people work in that career, and how much education is needed.

Activity Steps
  1. Print one worksheet for each student.
  2. The counselor should lead a class discussion explaining what the activity will entail.
  3. Each class member will visit the Career Ship web site and click on liftoff.
  4. Students will choose a type of career based on the six career clusters.
  5. After a cluster is chosen, they can then make a selection for a more specific career.  The site will list information concerning what the career entails, expected salary and benefits, where they may work, current job market and future projections, what kinds of people work in that field, and education needed.
  6. The students should look up information for the job or jobs they are interested in and make notes.
  7. After this data has been collected, have the students complete the worksheet.
  8. Finally, hold a counselor led discussion allowing each student to share what they have found.

Time Required
This activity may require two 20 minute sessions.  The first class discussion and visiting of the web site can take place during the first session, and completion of the worksheet and subsequent class discussion can take place during the second session.  It may also be accomplished during one 40 minute session.
