This activity will help students acquire competencies which relate to the following standard: 
6.0 Knowledge and Skills to Achieve Career Goals


The student will:

6.3 employ academic and job readiness skills to select post-secondary career options.
Approach The general approach is that students will conduct a web-based activity for which they
will answer questions on a worksheet.  A discussion of their answers will follow the assignment.

Activity Steps
    • Explain to the students that they will be participating in a web-based career activity.
    • Inform the students that while they are on the designated website they should be simultaneously following the directions on the worksheet.
    • Open the following WWW address:

    Lead the class in a discussion by reviewing the following questions:

    • Which occupations did you select? What type of work is entailed in these occupations?
    • What types of work conditions do these occupations involve?
    • What kinds of training or qualifications are needed for your chosen occupations?

    • What information did you find on salaries in your occupations? Is money an important factor to you in choosing an occupation? What other values are important to you in deciding on a career field? Impact on family? Leisure time?

Time Required
This activity will require 45-60 minutes.  30-45 minutes should be allotted for the students to locate the website, complete the career assessment, and record their answers on the worksheet.  Another 15-30 minutes should be provided for the ensuing discussion.

This activity is not only designed to assist students in exploring careers, but also to assist them in developing research, writing, and verbal skills.  These criteria can be measured subjectively by the counselor by determining how well the students articulate their thoughts on careers through writing and speaking.  Research skills could be measured by how well the students located the required information.  The counselor might emphasize how these skills are critical to success in college, should some students decide to take that course.
