  • Print and pass out the cake outline to each student.
  • Under close supervision, have the children cut out the cake with scissors that have blunt ends.  Ask all children to sit down while using the scissors and give other proper safety precautions.
  • Give each student some crayons and  paper candles to decorate their cake after it has been cut out.
  • Gather the children into a circle.
  • Ask each child to sit down and place their cake on the floor in front of himself/herself.
  • Suggest that the children look over at the cakes of those students sitting to either side.
  • Ask children to discuss what differences they see.
  • Identify the skills necessary to complete the activity (listening, cutting, coloring, writing, designing, etc.) and discuss occupations that may use those skills.
  • Discuss with children their favorite part of the activity (cutting, coloring, displaying, discussing, etc.).

Time Required

This activity should require one 30 minute session.  Children should take 10-20 minutes to complete the cake decoration and the discussion could last 10-15 minutes.

Resources Needed

  • one birthday cake outline for each student
  • several pairs of blunt-ended scissors
  • crayons or colored pencils
  • paper candle cutouts
  • double-sided tape or glue

Performance
