General
Approach
The general approach is that the counselor will lead the
children in a discussion about the employment of their
parents.  The counselor will also lead them to talk about
other kinds of jobs.  The children will color pictures
on various worksheets of many different kinds of workers,
and subsequently staple them together with a tile page to
create "My First Book About Jobs".

Activity
Steps

Lead children through a discussion as follows:

Different mothers and fathers do lots of different kinds of work.
Can any of you tell me what kinds of jobs your mothers and
fathers have?  (Allow for responses asking what the parents DO
on their jobs.)  Sometimes mothers and fathers decide that one of
them should stay at home and take care of the children while the
other one is at work.  It can be either or mommy or daddy that
stays at home.  There are many, many kinds of jobs that you can
choose from when you are a grown up.  When you grow up, what
would you like to be?  (Allow for responses.)  You know, it's a very
good idea to know about different kinds of jobs so that you can make
a good choice for yourself.  In our next few sessions together you
are going to make your very first book of jobs here with me.  I
am going to give you some pieces of paper with many pictures
of workers on them.  You can color them, and then we will put this
title page on the front, and you will have your own book about jobs.

  • Give each child the sheets of paper with pictures of job workers.
  • Have children color the people on the pages.
  • While they are coloring, talk about the workers' responsibilities.
  • Point out Mom AND Dad with the baby.
  • Point out that both men and women can do the same jobs.
  • Pass around the title page and then staple each booklet together.
  • Let the children show their books to the class.
  • Have them choose their favorite job to talk about while showing it.

Time
Required

This activity will require three 20 minute sessions.
The discussion about parent occupations should occur
during the first session.  Then in the next session the
children will color their books and put them together.
The last session will include children showing their books
and talking about their favorite occupations.

Performance
Indicators

When the child talks about his/her favorite occupation, the counselor
will ask the child what interests him/her about that occupation and
what some of the tasks of people in that occupation are.  The counselor
will ask if a man or a lady could do that job.
