This activity will help students acquire skills that will help prepare for college planning and admissions and relate to the following standards:

4.0  Career Awareness and Employment Readiness Skills
5.0  Career Information and Career Goals

The student will:

4.2 Access, interpret, and evaluate career information using technology and other resources.
5.1 Utilize school and community resources to gain information related to career clusters.


General Approach

The students will explore www.embark.com to learn more about themselves and their interests in relation to relation to college admissions and planning.


Activity Steps

1.  Have each student click on http://www.embark.com/ . to uncover excellent options and target the best schools.
2.  Click on the "Undergraduate Schools" icon.
3.  Click on "Find schools with Matchmaker", and the site is self-directed from that point.
4.  After students have had approximately thirty minutes to explore, ask each to share with the class the following:

  1. Which colleges/universities appealed to you and why? 
  2. What specific characteristics are you searching for in a college/university? 

5.  Discuss the importance and worth of all careers, regardless of college education.
6.  Print this worksheet to assist students to additional links for information on college admissions and planning. 


Time Required

This activity may take approximately one hour, depending on the number of students in the classroom.


Resources Needed

Each student will need a computer with access to the Internet.
