Learning Expectations

This activity will help students acquire competencies which relate to the following standards:

4. Career awareness and employment readiness skills
6. Knowledge and skills to achieve career goals

The student will:

4.2 Access, interpret, and evaluate career information using technology and other resources
4.4 Demonstrate an understanding of how personal characteristics relate to career choice
6.1 Evaluate how interests, abilities, and achievement relate to attaining personal, social, academic and and career goals
6.7 Explore the changing workplace and its requirement for flexibility and lifelong learning

General Approach

The general approach is that students will explore various career options through several web sites, complete a worksheet, share information, and have a discussion regarding the discoveries they have made.

Activity Steps

  • Begin the activity by gauging the students' knowledge of "for profit" schools. Ask them to give some examples of these schools and if they know what differentiates them from other, post secondary types of education.
  • Give each student a Worksheet which they will complete throughout their on-line exploration.
  • Have the students go to the following ACCSCT web site to begin their exploration of vocational/specialization schools. The address is http://www.accsct.org.
  • After each student has completed his/her worksheet, ask them to share some web sites that were of particular interest to them. Using a viewing screen accessible to the whole class, pull up a few web sites and have the class discuss them. If this resource is not available, separate the students into groups of three, and ask each student to share a web site.
  • Engage the students in a discussion prompted by the following questions:

    • The Career Colleges and Schools of Texas web site boasts the following slogan: "Improving Lives through 'Hire' Education." What do you think is meant by that?
    • Give some examples of situations in which it would be better for a person to attend a "for profit" school rather than a four-year college.
    • What did you learn about vocational/specialization schools that was surprising to you?
    • What may be some drawbacks to attending a vocational school rather than a four-year program?

Time Required

Allow about 1 1/2 hours for this activity. It will probably take about 45 minutes for students to explore the web sites and complete the worksheet. Sharing the web sites will take about 20 minutes, while the discussion should take 15 minutes.

Resources Needed

1.  Access to the Internet
2.  A worksheet
3.  Pencils/pens
4.  Ability to project the teacher's monitor (if possible)
