This activity will help students acquire competencies which relate to the following standards:

4.3 Make decisions, set goals, and develop plans for the future.


General Approach

The general approach is that students will use the internet to visit a web site, where they will explore the admissions process to medical school. This will be followed by a counselor led discussion.


Activity Steps

1. Give the printed activity to each student.
2. Have the students sit at their computers and visit  http://www.bestpremed.com/
3. Tell the students to answer the activity questions by reading and taking notes on the information they find at this web site.
4. Gather the students in a circle .

Lead the students through a discussion:

This activity is used to help you become more familiar with the process of medical school admissions. The purpose is to gain a knowledge of the necessary requirements to be admitted to medical school, so that you may plan your future accordingly, because medical school is extremely competitive. The sooner you start engaging in the process of meeting the goal of becoming a medical doctor, the brighter your career future will be.

Discuss these questions with the students after they have had adequate time to answer them.

1. Who are the three main groups this web site is targeted towards?
2. Generally how long does it take to get the MD (Doctor of Medicine) degree.
3. Generally how long does residency last to become a family physician? How long generally if you specialize in a particular area of medicine?
4. Name four courses you must have taken to be eligible for medical school admissions.
5. Name the standardized examination required for admission to medical school and name the four different sections of the test.
6. Briefly describe the steps of the application process.
