Standards

Learning
Expectations

This activity will help student acquire competencies which relate to the following standards:
7.  Self knowledge and interpersonal skills
The student will:
7.2  Identify and express feelings in an appropriate manner
7.3  Examine behavior and exhibit self-control

General
Approach
Students will be given copies of the worksheet (see below)  and will be asked to match feeling and behavior words to the given situations.  When this has been completed, the group will discuss their responses and receive feedback from the instructor and peers.  The activity will demonstrate appropriate behavioral responses, and will also show that individuals react differently to the same situations.  This will create a greater awareness of others for the students.

Activity  Steps
  1. Students will be given the worksheets
  2. Allow approximately twenty minutes to complete the worksheet.   NOTE:  students may choose more than one emotional response word.
  3. When all the students are finished, begin discussion about their responses.
  4. Help the class determine which behavioral responses are appropriate and which are not.
  5. Point out that many of them had similar and different responses to the same situations.
  6. Wrap up by asking if there are any questions
  7. If time allows, you can allow some students to role model the situations and appropriate responses.

Time Required
This activity will require roughly forty-five minutes.

Resources Needed
  • worksheet
  • writing utensils

Performance
Indicators
After completing the activity, students should be able to discuss ways to respond emotionally and behaviorally to given situations.  They should be able to distinguish between appropriate and inappropriate behavioral responses.  Students should also be able to recognize that others may have similar, or different feelings  about the same situation.
