7.1        Demonstrate a positive attitude toward self as a

7.4    Recognize change as a part of growth

General Approach

Students participate in a two-part activity and follow-up discussion about changes they are experiencing as they mature. Students first find peers who have experienced particular physical changes, and then find peers who have learned or developed particular talents, skills and abilities.

Activity Steps

  • Lead students in a general discussion of how they are changing physically as they grow.
  •  Distribute copies of the “Growing Bodies Scavenger Hunt” worksheet.
  • Allow students to find peers who have experienced each change listed on the worksheet.
  • Discuss the results of the scavenger hunt as a group. Stress that almost everyone has had similar experiences in body changes.
  • Introduce the concept of other kinds of growth students are experiencing—learning new skills, abilities, and developing talents and interests.
  • Distribute copies of the “Growing in Learning” scavenger hunt worksheet.
  • Allow students to find peers who have experienced each change listed on this worksheet.
  • Discuss the results of the second scavenger hunt as a group. Stress that almost everyone has had very different experiences in learning, and are becoming unique individuals due to positive growth in all the ways discussed.
