These include:

  • A thorough summer “Steps-to-Success” program that gives incoming graduate students a bonafide hands-on research experience to ensure they have mastered the basic biological skills crucial for success.
  • calulatorThe National Institute of Mathematical and Biological Synthesis (NIMBioS), housed at the University of Tennessee, which administers tutorials in basic programming and analysis (i.e, MATLAB tutorial and R) that emphasize a high-level of mathematics, computing, and statistical skills.
  • A research environment that has gained international recognition for computing technology and state-of-the-art research, including the world’s sixth fastest supercomputer housed at UT in the National Institute of Computational Science.
  • Access to the Spallation Neutron Source, the world most intense pulsed accelerator-based neutron source, and the High Flux Isotope Reactor, the world’s highest flux reactor-based neutron source housed at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory.
  • Participation in a community of scholars that allows graduate students to share experiences and insights, break down barriers that impede success, and integrate their personal and professional lives.
  • Conference and research travel opportunities.
