Step 3: Advertise for and Recruit Applicants
Form(s) Required: Contact logs for Search Committee members
From the time that the “Request to Search” is approved, a search must remain open to applicants for a minimum of four weeks (unless otherwise stated in these procedures or a
reduced time period has been approved by OED). The Search Committee will determine
where and how it will advertise a position. The more creative and aggressive a
committee is in its dissemination efforts, the more likely it is to generate interest from a
diverse pool of qualified applicants. Search Committees are not required to advertise in
any particular publication or to contact any particular group; rather, committees are
encouraged to spend their time and advertising dollars on publications and methods
relevant to the position. Each Search Committee member should maintain a contact log to indicate all contacts made (letters, e-mails, telephone calls) during the search. This
form is available in the back of this manual or by contacting OED (974-2498).
The Office of Equity and Diversity maintains lists of potential recruiting resources,
including lists for:
- Advertising and Recruiting resources for Academic and Service Disciplines
- Historically Black Colleges and Universities
- Women’s Colleges and Universities
- Native American Colleges and Universities
- Local and State Colleges and Universities
The use of these resources is not required; they may, however, supplement other
advertising and recruiting methods. Additional recruiting sources include:
- Ads placed in professional journals, membership lists or vitabank services.
- Departments and contacts at other universities offering relevant degrees; colleagues who may know of potential qualified candidates.
- Internet resources, list serves, e-mail lists.
- Professional associations and meetings serving specific populations; for example, Women in Engineering, Association of Black Psychologists, etc.
- Applicants identified through other similar searches conducted by the department or other University departments; current UT employees.
- Local and Campus-based groups and individuals: UT Black Recruitment and Retention Advisory Committee, Commission for Women, Commission for Blacks, Office of Minority Student Affairs, and Center for International Education as well as local community-based agencies, if appropriate.
