Historical Musicology & Ethnomusicology

The Concentration in Musicology provides advanced studies in historical musicology and ethnomusicology. Graduates of this program would be qualified to pursue careers as teachers and researchers of musicology-related subjects at the college level and to pursue doctoral study in historical musicology or ethnomusicology. (See M.M. Program Outline)

The University of Tennessee's Musicology Area encompasses both historical musicology and ethnomusicology with faculty specializations that include opera, musical exoticism, medieval music, gender studies, world musics, popular musics, and music and technoculture. Courses and seminars adopt a range of approaches, variously emphasizing historical styles, analytical techniques, theory and methodology, and social, intellectual, and cultural contexts. The fine collections of the George F. DeVine Music Library further enrich musicological studies at UT.

Funding Opportunities

Dr. Rachel Golden

There are several funding opportunities for musicology students at UT. Within the School of Music, the Graduate Assistantship in Musicology includes a stipend, tuition wavier, and medical coverage. Additionally, the School of Music employs several graders to assist instructors in undergraduate musicology classes. The Graduate School offers several other funding avenues (see other sources here). Materials for the Graduate Assistantship in Musicology are due at the School of Music by March 1; check the web link above for deadlines and requirements for the Grad School's other funding options, application processes, and deadlines. We encourage all prospective students to apply for funds from as many sources as possible.
