Interdisciplinary Minors : Other Programs & Minors
Students following the B.A. concentration in Music and Culture are encouraged to consider a minor in one of the College of Arts and Sciences' interdisciplinary degree programs. (See summaries below of minors espeically valuable to Music and Culture students.)
Africana Studies Minor -- Two required courses (Introduction to African-American Studies, AAAS 201, AAAS 202) plus 15 hours, nine hours of which at the upper division, and with two courses cross-listed with other departments (includes our Introduction to African American Music, Musicology 310/Africana Studies 310) (see course list at http://web.utk.edu/~africana/undergrad.htm).
American Studies Minor -- Two required courses, Introduction to American Studies (AS 310) and Topics in American Culture (AS 410), plus fifteen hours of courses from the American Studies course list, and nine additional hours from at least two other disciplines (see course list at http://web.utk.edu/~amerstud/program.html).
Asian Studies Minor -- Two required courses, Asian Civilization (AS 101, AS 102) and 15 credits at 200 level and above; 12 credits come from one of the four geographical/cultural areas; Islamic world, South Asia, China, Japan. Six from art, literature, music, philosophy, and religious studies; six from anthropology, economics, geography, history, political science, and sociology; three hours from another geographical/cultural area (see description at http://web.utk.edu/~asc/).
Cinema Studies Minor -- Required course of Introduction to Film Studies (CS 281 or Eng 281); three hours chosen from Introduction to Cinematography as Art (CS 235), Introduction to Video Art (CS 236), Audio/Video Production (Electronic Media 330); nine additional credits from any course in cinema studies or cross-listed with cinema studies or Introduction to Radio and Television (Electronic Media 275), Audio/Video Production (Electronic Media 330), Electronic Field Production (Electronic Media 430) (see listings at http://web.utk.edu/~cinema/minor.htm).
Global Studies Minor -- One required prerequisite, Global Studies 250, plus eighteen additional credit hours distributed among categories Global Society and Culture (minimum of two courses) and Global Politics and Economy (minimum of two courses) (see course listings at http://web.utk.edu/~global/major_minor.php).
Judaic Studies Minor -- Requires Introduction to Judaism (Religious Studies 381) and History of Jewish Civilization I (History 383); nine hours selected from the Judaic Studies major concentration (see listings at http://web.utk.edu/~judaic/undergrad/major.html).
Latin American Studies Minor -- Practical working knowledge of Spanish or Portuguese; requires Introduction to Latin American Studies (LAS 251 and LAS 252), three credits of an approved Spanish or Portuguese literature or culture course at the 300 or 400 level, and nine additional hours selected from courses offered by three different participating departments (see course listings at http://web.utk.edu/~LatAmer/undergrad_major_minor.html).
Medieval Studies Minor -- Two required courses, Medieval Civilization (MS 201) and Seminar in Medieval Studies (MS 403), plus twelve additional hours distributed among three categories of study: history, philosophy, political science, and religion; language and literature; and the arts (see course lists at http://web.utk.edu/~marco/undergradprogs.shtml).
Women's Studies Minor -- Two required courses, Images of Women in Literature: Biography and Autobiography (WS 210) or Images of Women in Literature: Fiction, Poetry, Drama (WS 215), and Women in Society (WS 220), plus four additional upper division Women's Studies Courses (see course list at http://web.utk.edu/~wstudy/undergrad/ugrad.php).
