Historical Musicology & Ethnomusicology
The Musicology area of the School of Music encourages students to approach music as a culturally expressive form, engage with the musical richness of our world, and develop their own musical identities within an increasingly interconnected globe. Courses variously emphasize music cultures and repertories, theory and methodology, and analytical techniques. Our programs also create a framework for students to pursue performance experiences as a means to understand music as part of culturally- and historically-situated forms. Further, we encourage students to participate in interdisciplinary activities and collaboration. The Musicology area also provides opportunities for personal mentoring and flexible curricula that can be tailored to suit individual interests. Graduates of our programs are prepared to enter careers in music and related fields, pursue further graduate studies, lead enriched musical lives, and understand music's social roles and expressive significance.
Undergraduate Programs
The Musicology area offers a range of courses and degree specializations. For undergraduates, courses at the lower division give all students access to the historical and cultural study of music on a broad range of topics, while upper-division courses emphasize more critical thinking and deeper understanding. Undergraduates interested in degrees in music history, historical musicology and ethnomusicology, or pursuing related careers in music librarianship, music journalism, music publishing, or media industries, should consider the Bachelor of Arts degree concentration in Music and Culture. Musicology also offers a Music and Culture Minor for students pursuing other bachelor degrees who would like to enhance their education with additional studies in musicology.
Graduate Programs
Graduate courses in historical musicology and ethnomusicology provide graduate students with instruction in the historical and cultural study of music through advanced courses, seminars, and independent study. Course approaches include style-historical, analytical, theoretical, methodological, and those that emphasize social, intellectual, and cultural contexts. For students who wish to pursue advanced degrees in historical musicology or ethnomusicology, the School of Music offers an integrated Master of Music with Concentration in Musicology. Graduates of this program would be qualified to pursue careers as teachers in historical musicology or ethnomusicology and to pursue doctoral study in these fields.
