Overview

Twenty-eight years of experience consulting, managing and teaching in a variety of complex, research oriented computing environments.

Experience

University of Tennessee Customer Technology Support (after major layoff, 7/96-present)

Manager, Statistical Consulting Center: Manage a team of 7 people and provide direct customer support.

  • Consult for a wide variety of research projects providing assistance with design, data & text analysis, programming, graphics, database management and writing journal articles.
  • Develop and teach courses and training workshops in introductory through advanced computing and research techniques.
  • Write technical documentation and newsletter articles.
  • Negotiate contracts and coordinate distribution of research software state-wide.
  • Maintain web page http://oit.utk.edu/scc

Accomplishments: Rebuilt the center from the ground up after all customer service was eliminated in a major budget cut. Converted to a fee-for-service structure, raising over $120,000 in the first six weeks, which allowed us to begin rebuilding after a major reorganization and reduction in force. Developed all new policies & procedures, developed and sold service contracts, wrote specifications for a time tracking & billing system, developed an advertising campaign, developed a new training program. Rebuilt staff and client base in two years. Negotiated new SAS and SPSS contracts which reduced yearly costs by $42,000 and added data mining software at very good terms. Established a research Citrix server that saves the University over $100,000 per year in software costs. Established web survey server that collects data on 40+ surveys per semester.

University of Tennessee Computing and Administrative Systems (after reengineering, 7/95-7/96)

Acting Manager, Customer Services: Managed 52 people as they helped our customers complete their computing and research tasks.  Customer Services included:

  • Statistical Consulting Center - helped researchers by working with them to effectively apply statistical methodology.  Co-sponsored and co-staffed by the Department of Statistics.
  • Science and Engineering Technology Team - supported researchers working with programming languages, supercomputing/parallel processing, visualization.
  • Help Desk - phone support center that answered basic questions; performed triage on other problems.
  • Personal Computing Team - installed and supported servers, PCs, office suite software.
  • Customer Advocate Team - helped customers when other parts of CAS failed to meet their needs.

Accomplishments: Integrated Help Desk staff into each team (it had been separate which created inter-group conflict) and implemented an Automatic Call Distribution system.  These changes led to a 52% increase in the number of problems solved per week with the same resources.  Customer and staff satisfaction increased significantly.  Continued to consult on a variety of research projects.

University of Tennessee Computing Center (before reengineering, 7/94-7/95)

Acting Assistant Director, User Services: Managed 22 people as they helped our customers complete their computing and research tasks (75%) and provided statistical consulting on research projects (25%).  Consulting is described in the section below; teams managed were:

  • Statistical Consulting Center - helped researchers by working with them to effectively apply statistical methodology.  Co-sponsored and co-staffed by the Department of Statistics.
  • Mathematics Group - supported researchers working with numeric and symbolic mathematical programming, supercomputing/parallel processing and visualization.
  • General Computing Support - helped a wide range of computer users solve their problems.

Accomplishments: Increased the number of training courses taught five-fold.  Initiated our first advertising campaign, which dramatically increased attendance at our training courses. Doubled the number software of site licenses. Reduced the number of supported email packages from thirty to five (one or two per operating system.)  Began moving software from proprietary systems to Unix and desktop computers. Replaced almost all staff machines to bring them up to current standards.

University of Tennessee Statistical Consulting Center   (7/79 - 7/94)

Head, Statistical Consulting: Managed 5 full-time and 4 half-time consultants, 12 faculty consultants as they helped our clients complete their research (60%) and provided statistical consulting on research projects (40%).

  • Consulted for a wide variety of research projects providing assistance with design, analysis, programming, graphics, database management and writing journal articles.
  • Helped thousands of students get their Ph.D. and M.S. degrees and professors complete their research.
  • Developed and taught seminars in introductory through advanced research and computing techniques.
  • Wrote manuals, handouts and monthly newsletter articles.
  • Installed and maintained software on a variety of mainframes, workstations and servers (Netware and Appleshare).  Wrote and maintained SAS/Connect login script files.

Accomplishments: Converted a Statistical Consulting Group into a joint venture with the Department of Statistics, the Statistical Consulting Center.  This greatly expanded the range of problems that we could solve.

University of Tennessee Department of Marketing  (9/78 - 6/79) Analyzed data and maintained database of SAS and SPSS files for a variety of research projects.  Clients included several major corporations.

Knoxville Metropolitan Planning Commission (5/79 - 7/79) Consulted on recreational planning survey.

University of Tennessee Department of Statistics  (9/78 - 6/79) Analyzed data.

Arizona State Univ. Dept. of Ed. Psych. (8/77 - 6/78) Collected data, analyzed and wrote up results.

Peoria Addictions Research Institute (8/75 - 2/76) Collected data, analyzed and wrote up results.
