Ramadan Mubarak! Ramadan started Saturday the 23rd of September, and that means the Fast-a-thon isn't too far ahead. The date for this year's fast-a-thon is October 9th and the dinner will take place in the University Center Ballroom. Here's a brief explanation of Fast-a-thon, but if you want to know about the National Project, just click the "Hungry?" icon to the left. (Also, remember to join the facebook group, "UT Fast-a-Thon 2006"):
The Muslim Students Association of UT in conjunction with TeamVOLS would like to invite you to participate in the 2006 Ramadan Fast-a-Thon.
The Fast-a-Thon is an innovative program designed to raise money for the Love Kitchen, a local emergency food pantry and soup kitchen, while increasing awareness about the problem of hunger and homelessness in Knoxville.
Here's how the Fast-A-Thon works:
•During the month of Ramadan, Muslims worldwide fast during the daylight hours. We’re challenging UT students and staff to pledge to go hungry for one day.
•For every person who pledges to fast, local businesses donate $2 to the Love Kitchen.
•The pledgees will abstain from food and drink from dawn until sunset on October 9th.
•At the end of the day, all participants are invited to break their fast at 7:10pm in UT’s University Center Ballroom with delicious home-cooked meals provided by local Muslim families.
HOW YOU CAN HELP OUT:
•Pledge to fast on October 9th at one of the pledge tables on the UC and Humanities plazas from:
SEPTEMBER 25th-29th & OCTOBER-6th
At UT, the Fast-a-Thon has become one of the most successful annual events on campus. In 2004, over 870 people signed up to fast, raising more that $1,740 for the Love Kitchen. In 2003, Interim President Joe Johnson fasted for the day and shared his experience at the Fast-a-Thon dinner. We hope that with your participation this year’s Fast-a-Thon will be even more successful.
