Bryant Creel

BRYANT CREEL is Professor of Spanish, specializing in Spanish literature of the Golden Age (16th and 17th centuries). He studied at the Universidad Autónoma de México in 1960 and the Universidad de Salamanca in 1962-62, graduating from Stanford University with a major in English in 1965. He pursued graduate studies in Spanish for two years at the Unversidad Complutense de Madrid, receiving his Master’s degree in Spanish from California State University in Sacramento in 1967. He completed his Ph.D. in Spanish literature at the University of California at Davis in 1978 and received two post-doctoral Calouste Gulbenkian fellowships to do research in Portugal and Spain, as well as an NEH Summer Seminar award to study with Stephen Greenblatt in Berkeley. He has taught at York College of the City University of New York, California State University at Long Beach, Louisiana State University, Providence College, and Harvard University. Apart from numerous contributions to scholarly journals, anthologies, and conference proceedings on such subjects as cancionero poetry, Gil Vicente, Garcilaso de la Vega, Jorge de Montemayor, Bernardim Ribeiro, Luiz de Camões, Fray Luis de León, Miguel de Cervantes, and Jorge de Sena, he has published The Religious Poetry of Jorge de Montemayor; Don Quijote, Symbol of a Culture in Crisis; The Voice of the Phoenix: Metaphors of Death and Rebirth in Classics of the Iberian Renaissance; and a translation of the play Los Cuernos de don Friolera by Ramón del Valle-Inclán. He is currently Director of the upper-division summer program in Alicante, Spain. He also holds the position of Editor of the monographic series Albatros-Hispanófila Siglo XXI, published in Valencia, Spain.
