Harriet Bowden

Harriet Wood Bowden is Assistant Professor of Spanish, with a specialization is Second Language Acquisition. She is also Coordinator of Second Year Spanish at UT. She received her Ph.D. from Georgetown University in Spanish Linguistics. Her dissertation research, supported by grants from the NIH and NSF, investigated the role of experience and proficiency in late-acquired language neurocognition. Specifically, this research examines the representation and processing of Spanish in (1) native speakers and (2) non-native speakers at varying levels of experience and proficiency and compares how they are processed in the brain. Other research interests include the effects of instruction, bilingualism, working memory, attention, and awareness on second language acquisition.
