The Forrest and Patsy Shumway Chair of Excellence in Romance Languages

The Shumway Chair of Excellence is an endowed position that was created in 1987 in order to establish a distinguished graduate program in French and Spanish at the University of Tennessee. The faculty of Modern Foreign Languages and Literatures (MFLL) seek an internationally recognized full professor who specializes in the literatures, languages, and cultures of the French and/or Spanish Caribbean to fill this position beginning in Fall 2010. (Advanced associate professors with the credentials for promotion will also be considered.) The new recipient of the Shumway Chair will have a distinguished record of scholarly achievement, teaching, and mentoring at the graduate and undergraduate levels. He or she will provide leadership for the growth of our MA and PhD tracks in French and/or Spanish and for our program in Latin American Studies. The position involves developing and guiding collaborative research activities, participating in the intellectual and creative leadership of the Department, and attracting outstanding graduate students and faculty to MFLL. In addition, the Shumway Chair will foster linkages with other institutions and centers of Caribbean Studies as a means of creating opportunities for the professional development and growth of our students and faculty.

Required Qualifications: Ph.D. in Romance Languages, French or Spanish, or a related field, with primary teaching and research concentration in either literature, linguistics, or the cultures of the Caribbean. Native-level competence in English and either French or Spanish. Candidates will have a distinguished publication and teaching record as Caribbeanists.

Preferred Qualifications: Linguistic and scholarly competencies that allow for productive interaction across and between the French and Spanish Caribbean. Professional expertise that will contribute to the growth and development of some or all of the University's interdisciplinary programs in Africana and Diaspora Studies, Cinema Studies, Comparative Literatures, Global Studies, Latin American Studies, and Women's Studies. Scholarly and teaching interests that extend beyond traditional disciplinary boundaries. A successful track record in obtaining external funds for research and/or curriculum development.
