GOOD NEWS!
- Amy Bertram (French) will present a paper at SEMA in Oxford, MS on
Oct. 14. The title is "A Return to Eternal Return (1943): Rereading Cocteau’s Modernized Version of the
Tristan and Iseut Myth.
- Greg Kaplan (Spanish) has been invited to present a lecture at
Princeton University on October 5. The lecture, titled "Transferring Bodies: The Seventh-Century
Cult of St. Millán in the Cave Churches of Valderredible, Cantabria (Spain)," deals with themes covered
in his forthcoming monograph on these cave churches.
- David Lee’s (German) article on two German poems in the journal Das
achtzehnte Jahrhundert (30.1 [2006]: 30-47) caught the attention of a writer for the culture section of
one of Germany’s leading newspapers, the Frankfurter Allgemeine, and it was the subject of a short article
in the newspaper (12 July 2006, N3).
- Dan Magilow (German) spoke on "The Short Life and Death of Kitty
Weichherz (1929-1942)" September 10 at the East Tennessee Historical Society.
- Oscar Rivera-Rodas (Spanish) announces that writer Roberto Fernandez
Retamar (Cuba, 1930) has accepted an invitation to join the Segundas Jornadas Internacionales de Poesía
Latinoamericana, which takes place in Puebla, Mexico, and where they will pay tribute to his work. The
event will be held July 9-12, 2007. Fernandez Retamar is one of the most distinguished Latin American poets
at the present time, in addition to being a critic and theoretician of Latin American literature. He is
also the President of the Casa de las Américas in Havana. This year’s Jornadas de Poesía was dedicated to
poet Jose Emilio Pacheco (Mexico, 1938) and experienced great success.

Goals:
This session is a resource for instructors who would like to provide students with meaningful, authentic
materials and communication in the target language on a sustained basis. A general introduction to VoIP
and the leading software will be followed by a walk-through of the initial setup for Skype and Gizmo, and
how to get started calling other Skype/Gizmo users for free. Then, we'll explain the paid features you can
use with both, and explore pedagogical applications and deployment strategies.

purposes. This Basic HTML session will include 5 lessons and a hands-on practice lesson.

(1 to 1.5 hours)

Goals:
This session is for instructors who would like to provide students with around-the-clock access to the most
current grade information for their course, AND/OR for those who have Web pages that they would like to easily
deploy as-is in their Blackboard courses. First, we will discuss how to upload previously-created Web pages into
blackboard and set them up to monitor use by your students. This workshop will end with a demonstration on building
a Gradebook, managing items and grades, setting up weighting, and other options offered in the Blackboard Gradebook.

- Faculty Research Seminar on Modern Germany
The next session of the Faculty Research Seminar on Modern Germany will take place this Wednesday, September 27,
at 4 PM in Temple Court 205. This will be a roundtable discussion of the recent "Living On" Holocaust-related
lectures given by Professors Gilya Schmidt and Dan Magilow. Attendance at these earlier lectures is not necessary,
but if you'd like to read the papers or see the Powerpoint presentations, please refer to the Seminar calendar
