Two of Nike Arnold's (German) articles were published in the international journal System and the annual AAUSC volume (American Association of University Supervisors and Coordinators) as follows:
"Reducing foreign language communication apprehension with computer-mediated communication: A preliminary study." System, 35 (4), 469-486, and "False beginners' transition to college level foreign language classes: Beliefs, expectations and cultures of learning," in J. Siskin (Ed.), From thought to action: Exploring beliefs and outcomes in the foreign language program (pp. 112-134). Heinle.
- Irina Bobrovitskaya (French) successfully completed all requirements for the M.A. in French and was graduated in fall 2007.
- Nuria Cruz-Camara (Spanish) has signed a contract with Juan de la Cuesta-Hispanic Monographs to publish her book, "El laberinto intertextual de Carmen Martín Gaite."
- Megan Gonzales (Spanish) successfully completed all requirements for the M.A. in Spanish and was graduated in fall 2007.
- Keith Moser's (recent Ph.D. in French) book based on his doctoral dissertation, "The Complex Ambivalence of 'Privileged Moments' in the Works of J.M.G. Le Clézio," has been accepted the Edwin Mellen Press.
- Natalia Pervukhin (Russian) had an article, "Russia in American
View: the Birth of an Image and its Historical Evolution," published in
the Academic Russian Journal on Cultural and History Studies "Otechestvennye Zapiski. Zhurnal dlia medlennogo chteniia," 2007: 5.
She was invited to write that article after a favorable review on her book "Pecherin: An Emigrant for all Seasons" (2006) appeared in that journal. In addition, two other positive reviews were published in the prestigious "NLO" (New Literary Review) and in the Internet Journal "Polit.ru" at the beginning of 2007.
- Nuria Cruz-Camara (Spanish) and Maria Stehle (German) have joined Donghui He (Chinese) as recipients of Professional Development Awards. Nuria will pursue a project titled “ ‘Public Women:’ Political Women Writers in Spain (1900-1939),” and Maria, a project titled “My World Is a Ghetto: Cityscapes and Identification in 21st Century Germany.” Michael Handelsman (Spanish) has been granted a Research Development Leave for spring 2009 to complete two book projects.

On November 19, four students were inducted into Delta Phi Alpha, the German National Honor Society. The induction ceremony was held at 4:00 pm in the Faculty Lounge of Hodges Library, and it was followed by a lecture by Professor David Tompkins (U. of Tennessee, Department of
History) on the topic "Unloved Neighbors: Polish-German Relations in Historical Perspective." Daniel Magilow was the main organizer for this event that was attended by more than 80 students and faculty members from across campus.

On November 27 starting at 6 p.m., the German Section held its first "German Majors and Minors Event" in the Great Room of the I-House, and about 50 students attended. Maria Stehle was the main organizer for this event that gave students an opportunity to meet with all German faculty members. Students also had an opportunity to show their creative talents by entering a gingerbread house competition.
