Why study Japanese?
Japan is cutting edge. In areas such as fashion, food, art, architecture, horror films, literature, graphic novels, and animation,
Japan is a leader in global postmodernity. Japan has the second largest economy in the world. Global ventures such as Sony, Toshiba,
Sanyo, Casio, Canon, Minolta, Honda, Toyota, and Mitsubishi are major players in their fields. It is estimated that over 80 million
Japanese use the internet. That is almost 10 percent of all internet users. The Japanese spend hundreds of billions of dollars each
year on consumer goods and services. The United States exports more goods to Japan than any other destination.
What can I do with Japanese?
The University of Tennessee offers a minor in Japanese and a major in
Language and World Business with a Japanese concentration. With this preparation, careers in the
areas of education, translation and interpreting, international business, journalism, tourism, and diplomacy are possible.
