French Major/Minor

French Major

The French major consists of 30 hours in courses numbered 333 and above.

A French major is also offered through the Language and World Business Progam. Click on the World Business link for further details.

All majors must have the following courses (or their equivalent with consent of the department):

  • 333: Intermediate Composition and Grammar [3]
  • 334: Intermediate Conversation [3]
  • 351-352: History of French Literature [3,3]
  • 421: Phonetics [3]
  • 422: Advanced Grammar [3]
  • 440: Capstone Experience in French [3]

Students must also have 9 hours of coursework beyond French 352, including at least one literature course at the 400 level. Exceptional students may substitute a 400-level course for either 333 or 334, with consent of the department.

French Minor

The French minor consists of 18 hours in courses numbered 333 and above, distributed as follows:

  • 333 or 334
  • 351-352
  • 421
  • Plus six (6) hours of electives at the 300 or 400 level

Honors Concentration

The honors concentration consists of at least 33 hours of French courses numbered above 302. Students must have at least 12 hours of honors courses, one of which must be an honors-by-contract course in French.

Application may be made after completion of French 351 and 352 or the equivalent. Students must present a cumulative GPA in French classes of not less than 3.50 and an overall GPA of not less than 3.25.

A final honors project (French 493), directed by a French faculty member and approved by the French honors committee, must be completed with a grade of B or higher during the last 30 hours of coursework. This project will encompass both a written essay or portfolio and an oral presentation to the French faculty.

French honors students will also complete a study abroad experience in France or another French-speaking country.
