French Major/Minor

French Major

French Major (declare as soon as possible; go to 701 McClung Tower): Consists of 30 hours in courses numbered 333 and above. All majors must have the following courses (or their equivalent with consent of the department): 333-334; 351-352; 421; 422; 440. Literature concentration students must also have 6 hours of literature at the 400 level, plus a 3-hour language-oriented or civilization course. Language concentration students must also have 6 hours of language-oriented or civilization courses, plus a 3-hour literature course at the 400 level.

Advanced students may substitute a 400-level course for either 333 or 334, with consent of the department. Contact Dr. Essif.

Total of 30 hours in courses numbered 333 and above:
6       333 and 334    (Intermediate Grammar/Intermediate Conversation)
6       351 and 352    (History of French Literature, I & II; may take 352 first)
3       421                  (Phonetics)
3       422                  (Advanced Grammar)
3       440                  (Capstone, Senior Seminar; topic varies; offered spring only)
9       ***                    (3 courses above 352; at least one 400-level literature class)

French major with a Language & World Business concentration:
Modified French major plus modified equivalent of a business major. For more information contact the Modern Foreign Languages Department or Professor John Romeiser or go to web.utk.edu/~mfll/french/world.htm.

French major with honors concentration:
The honors concentration consists of at least 33 hours of French courses numbered above 302. Students must have at least 12 hours of honors courses, one of which must be an honors-by-contract course in French. Application may be made after completion of French 351 and 352 or the equivalent. Students must present a cumulative GPA in French classes of not less than 3.50 and an overall GPA of not less than 3.25. A final honors project (French 493), directed by a French faculty member and approved by the French honors committee, must be completed with a grade of B or higher during the last 30 hours of coursework. This project will encompass both a written essay or portfolio and an oral presentation to the French faculty. French honors students will also complete a study abroad experience in France or another French-speaking country.

French Minor

Consists of 18 hours in courses numbered 333 and above, distributed as follows: 333; 351-352; 421; plus six hours of electives at the 300 or 400 level. French 300 does not count toward the minor, but is recommended for students needing grammar review.

Honors Concentration
