**Acts of Faith: Jewish Civilization in Spain
Films for the Humanities. 1VHS cassette (50 mins.):color 1995, Documentary. "Many Latinos in he American Southwest wear amulets and perform certain practices different from their fellow Latino Catholics -- and are discovering only now, to their great amazement, that they are descended from Jews who chose conversion rather than death at the time of the great expulsion from Spain in 1492. This program looks at remnants of what was once the great Jewish civilization in Spain: the artifacts, which were Christianized or destroyed, and the people, many of whom continued to practice elements of the religion and folklore of Judaism and for most of whom the memory of Jewishness has long since been extinguished." **Articulos de Costumbre (José de Larra)
Films for the Humanities and Sciences. 1 VHS cassette: color. Dramatization in Spanish. "Writers of the nineteenth century took particular pleasure in painting verbal portraits of quaint people and places: costumbrismo was the peculiarly Spanish manifestation of this style. José de Larra was the primary exponent of costumbrismo, writing articles that combined the techniques of costumbrist description with the slightly disengaged and sardonic view of the sophisticated madrileño. Larra's best work, here brought to tantilizing life, provides us with a first-hand view of Madrid in the last century." (from the video jacket)

Fernando Trueba. 1 VHS cassette (109 mins.) : color. Spanish with English subtitles, Feature wafilm. Spain, 1992. Belle Epoque is the irresistible story of Fernando, a handsome, young Spanish Civil War deserter who befriends a free-thinking artist. Fernando finds himself in a romantic dilemma when the artist's four beautiful daughters return to their country home -- which woman should he romance? The answer is hilariously simple, as Fernando is seduced instead by each of the high-spirited sisters (Every man's dream!). Reminiscent of Like Water for Chocolate, it's a rollicking sensual romp through a period of new found sexual freedom for women. A delicious blend of humor and passion that captured the Oscar for Best Foreign Film." (from the video jacket)

One of the most compelling dramas of Luis Buñuel's recently rediscovered Mexican career, El Bruto stands as a fascinating companion piece to his early masterpiece Los Olvidados, both unsparing portraits of slum life and the criminal behavior it breeds, rendered with the unique surrealistic vision that is dinstinctively Buñuel's." **Caudillo:The History of the Spanish Civil War
Films for the Humanities. 1 VHS cassette (111 mins.) : BW, Documentary. English,USA, 1991. "The Spanish Civil War was among the most exhaustively photographed modern bloodbaths, for both sides received not only military assistance, but superb documentary crews from outside. During the final years of the Franco regime, a Spanish filmmaker named Basilio Martín Patino set out to learn what really happened during the war, and why. Working underground and at great personal risk, Patino searched through the archives in Lisbon, Paris, London, Moscow, as well as in Spain; tracked down and interviewed combatants and survivors; and revisited the battlegrounds. There is no editorial commentary in this film, there is no need-- the footage speaks for itself. In the interest of clarity the Loyalist footage is tinted red and the Falangist footage is blue. Patino shows us both sides laughing and singing as they move to the front. The Falangists salute more smartly, but it is really only the tinting of the footage that enables the viewer to tell the combatants apart. After the battle, the footage is black and white. as death erases the very distinction for which these Spaniards died." (from the video jacket)

**Conversations with Latin American Writers
Films for the Humanities, 1998.Bibliographical series, 5 videos:
- Fernando del Paso
1 VHS cassette (43"):color, Spanish. "One of the great historical novels of the Latin American literary 'Boom,' Noticias del Imperio, was penned by the Mexican novelist Fernando del Paso, who also wrote Jose Trigo and Palinuro de México. But it is Noticias for which he is best known -- the story of the short-lived empire of the Austrian archduke Ferdinand Maximillian, placed on the Mexican throne by the French. In it, del Paso employs superb literary techniques to vividly re-create the historical period by interweaving various narrative types-- letters, straightforward historical narrative, parody, and personal reflection. In this interview, del Paso discusses his writing techniques and the literary influences that contributed to their formation."
- Jose Donoso
1 VHS cassette (50"):color, Spanish. "Jose Donoso, the Chilean writer, ranks high in the pantheon of great Spanish American novelists. Donoso is the author of Coronacion, Este Domingo, El Lugar sin Limites, and El Obsceno Pajaro de la Noche, his most famous work. Donoso is best known for his elaborate and less-than-complimentary descriptions of the fragile and decadent upper crust of Chilean society, threatened by an aspiring middle class and the anger and resentment of the workers and the poor. In this interview, Donoso, now in his seventies, speaks about his work and his literary technique."
- Gabriel García Márquez
1 VHS cassette (43"):color, Spanish. "This program features a rare interview with the man some consider the finest Latin America writer of the 20th century--Colombia's Gabriel García Márquez. His works The Autumn of the Patriarch, Love in the Time of Cholera, and One Hundred Years of Solitude have drawn international praise for their highly symbolic and marvelously ethereal representations of Latin America's social, political, and cultural psyche. - Roberto Fernandez Retamar
1 VHS cassette (28"):color, Spanish. "This program presents the distinguished and controversial Cuban poet, literary critic, and essayst whose work is closely connected with the Cuban revolution. Retamar's most famous essay, 'Caliban,' became a manifesto for Latin American writers. Caliban, tha savage of Shakespeare's The Tempest, becomes in Retamar's hands a metaphor of the cultural situation of Latin Americans-- Caliban is oppressed and a potential revolutionarry. Here is Retamar, somewhat mellowed by age, talking about his work, the Cuban Revolution, and Latin American literature.

Castro began as an idealist, a patriot who was hailed as the "George Washington" of CUba, but Castro betrayed his revolution and sold his country's birthrights to the communists. To the Cuban people it is unimportant whether Castro was a communist from the beginning or whether he sold out to the "Reds" after he took power. Those who fought with him, supported him, or hailed him are painfully aware that Fidel Castro has betrayed Cuba and his revolutionists. Follow the tyrrany of this self-proclaimed messiah as Fidel Castro's fiery rise to power ignites the fall of Cuban freedom." (from the video jacket)

Flowers for Guadalupe/Flores para Guadalupe: The Virign of Guadalupe in the lives of Mexican Women
Judith Gleason. 1 VHS cassette (57 mins.) : color. Documentary. "Flowers for Guadalupe/Flores para Guadalupe explores the importance of the Virgin of Guadalupe as a liberating symbol for Mexican women today. In the course of this richly textured treatment of an evolving symbol, twent-three women speak out, in traditional testimonio format. This unusual 'contata' of women's voices representing urban, small-town, and rural communities, is intercut with scenes of daily somen's work and celebration of the virgin of Guadalupe in various contexts, including festivities organized by the Comité Guadalupano in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn, New York. Women have been silenced for centuries in Mexico. By focussing on various feminine forms of devotion to the Virgin of Guadalupe as Mexican women's 'role model,' an entire world of consciousness unfolds. It is resilient, hard-working, often painful, violent world, encompassing women of all ages and from various walks of life. They belong to a wider world of popular devotion, historically both exploited and dismissed as unimportant by ecclesiastical authorities who would keep women in a place where they no longer want to be. The documentary follows an all-women's pilgrimage from Queretaro state throgh several arduous but joyful days as it weaves its way through difficult terrain, harsh weather and congested streets to the Virgin's shrine in Mexico Ciety. The songs of Rosa Martha Zarate, Mexico's 'singing nun,' sustains this nad every woman's pilgrimage." (from the video jacket)

He was sought after by nobility as a premier portraiartist of the day, tolerated by the King and court in spite of his artistic mockery of them, and revered by most as a true genius. This motion picture faithfully captures Goya's most prominent works: the etchings, war scenes, bullfight sequences, tapestries, and portraits of royalty and friends... the frescoes at the cathedral at Salagossa and the church of St. Anthony. . . the famous "black paintings" from the walls of his own home. **Looking for a space: Lesbians and Gay Men in Cuba
Kelly Anderson. 1 VHS cassette (38 mins.) : color. "One of the ironies of the Cuban Revolution was that, from the beginning, it persecuted many of its loyal supporters because of their sexual orientation. 'Looking for a space' examines the cultural, political and historical reasons behind the persectuion for lesbians and gay men during the early years of the Revolution, and takes a fresh look at this issue from the perspectives of Cubans who are living on the island today. We meet a diverse group of people, from a wide range of age groups and occupations, who express differences of opinion. Older people recall the repression of the late sixties when gay people were sent to 'UMAP' camps for 're-education.' During the Mariel boatlift of 1980, many gay people were seen as 'counterrevolutionary' for fleeing the country. Many younger Cubans feel there is more tolerance today, as an emerging gay subculture demonstrates. Given the uncertain political and economic climate of today's Cuba, the future remains unclear. The documentary raises critical questions about political ideology and sexual identity." (from the video jacket)

**Nowhere else to live
Alan Handel Productions. 1 VHS cassette (26 mins.) : color. "In the last forty years, Mexico City, one of the largest and most densely inhabited places in the world, has seen a population explosion from one million to nearly twenty million. The landless peasants who arrive in Mexico City find survival no easier than the rural poverty they sought to escape. Half of the population are, or have been, illegal squatters. By introducing us to several families who struggle to survive here, the film puts a human face on Mexico's urban poor. The Martinez family is one of thirty seven families who live in the shell of a house reduced to rubble by an earthquake. Ramon Martinez dreams of saving enough money from his shoeshine work to marry the mother of his four children in a proper ceremony. Guadalupe is a single mother living in one of the tin and cardboard shacks that lines the road to the airport. She shares a tape of untreated water with her nieghbors. Jorge is one of twenty thousand people who live on the fringe of Mexico City's garbage dumps. His wife was buried alive by an avalanche caused by the illegal dumping of trash. One organizer, Clara Brugada, is part of a barrio which decided to fight back. With their own hands the people replaced the mud huts with sturdy housing and stood up to the police who have tried to evict them. It now stands as a beacon of hope for those who live on the edge." Comedy and tragedy blen to portray a surreal and perverse fable of contemporary life." (from the video jacket)

**Retrato de Teresa
Pastor Vega. 1 VHS cassette (103 mins.) : color. Spanish with English subtitles, Feature film. Cuba, 1979. Actors: Daisy Granados, Adolfo Llaurado. "Portrait of Teresa is the second film in the Cuban Cinema series and is perhaps the most controversial film yet from Cuba. Teresa, vividly portrayed by Daisy Granados, is a housewife and mother who works in a textile factory. Her involvement in political and cultural groups incurs the displeasure of her husband, who expects her to be waiting with a hot meal when he comes home at night. The resulting difficulty in their marriage is depicted with compassion and authenticity. Though center stage belongs to Teresa, it is the bond of sexual and emotional empathy between her and her husband (Adolfo Llaurado) that gives the film its intensity and anguish." Since it was established in 1946, the United States Army School of the Americas has trained thousands of Latin American and Caribbean soldiers. Among them, we learn in this exposé, are the former dictators of Argentina, Bolivia, Honduras and Panama. Using rarely-seen footage, the program shows how officers who study at the school are responsible for the deaths of tens of thousands of people -- including Archbishop Romero of El Salvador. Edward Burke and Ruth Shapiro. 1 VHS cassette (58 mins.) : color. "This multi-award winning film explores the realities of life in the Latin American country best known as a haven for the Contras. The founder of Teatro la Fragua, charismatic Jack Warner, is a man of the theater, the Church and the people. We follow him and his band of actors toremote villages and discover the heart of Honduras -- people eager to regain control of their lives which have been torn apart by centuries of foreign intrusion. In a country that expects its people to be silent, Teatro la Fragua offers them an opportunity to stand and be heard!" (from the video jacket)
**Threads of Hope
Films for the Humanities. 1 VHS cassette (51 mins.) : color. Documentary, English. "This program tells the powerful story of a group of women who banded together and dared to defy the brutal dictatorship of Chile's Gen. Augusto Pinochet. The women -- mothers, wives, and sisters of the tens of thousands of victims of the regime's torture and execution -- armed only with scraps of cloth, sewing needles, and the overwhelming desire to find their loved ones, set to work to tell their stories by creating arpilleras, colorful handmade tapestries which chronicled the horror and injustice of Pinochet's reign of terror. The tapestries were ultimately smuggled out of the country and sold, with the proceeds returned to Chile to support the victims' families. The program, narrated by Donald Sutherland, explores the compelling stories of three of these women and how through their vibrant and beautiful art they were able to transform their trauma, grief, and their hope into commitment to help the survivors, and in their own way, to help democracy to return to Chile." **Walls of Mexico, The
Films for the Humanities. 1 VHS cassette (56 mins.) : color. Documentary, English. "This beautifully filmed program looks at the wall paintings of some of the most famous Mexican muralists -- Diego Rivera, Juan O'Gorman, José Clemente Orozco -- and at the work of Luis Barragán, the greatest Mexican architect of this century. Their common medium is the wall. The muralists sought to return art to the people, by putting it on the walls of public buildings, just as it had been in the days of their Mayan forefathers. Barragán embraced a modernism imported from Europe, but developed a style that echoes with memories of ancient times. Both the muralists and Barragán used the wall to create something new and vital, but they all found their guiding force in the roots of Mexican art and culture, in traditions grounded in the pre- Columbian era."
