Ehe der Maria Braun, Die (The Marriage of Maria Braun)
Rainer Werner Fassbinder. 1 VHS cassette (120 mins.) : color. German with English subtitles, Feature film. Germany, 1978.

"The Marriage of Maria Braun is the most spectacular film of Rainer Werner Fassbinder's career, and probably of the entire New German Cinema. Here his favorite leading actress, Hanna Schygulla, stars as a post WWII survivalist who uses equal doses of seduction and self-preservation to keep afloat in the troubled, cut-throat society of a Germany rebuilding its ravaged countryside and spirit. This deeply moving film is a successful mix of soap opera, sexual politics, offbeat comedy, and epic romance. Schygulla's shattering performance as Maria Braun established her as one of Europe's finest actresses." (from the video jacket)

François Truffaut. 1 VHS cassette (86 mins.) BW. French with English subtitles. France,1970. Actors: François Truffaut, Jean-Pierre Cargol. ISBN#0-7928-0886-x.

"In what has been called his most mature and aesthetic film to date, acclaimed director François Truffaut has created an absorbing, delicate and unpredictable as life itself. Based on the true account of Jean- Marc-Gaspard Itard, a doctor at The National Institute for the Deaf and Dumb in Paris, The Wild Child follows the capture of a young boy who is discovered living like an animal in the forest. Truffaut himself gives a memorable performance as Itard, unyielding in his belief that the child, played with a haunting precision by Jean-Pierre Cargol, can be transformed into a civilized being. Itard removes the young orphan from the institute and takes him into his own home. Victor, as the boy is now called, becomes increasingly divided between his longing for the wilderness and his new life with the doctor. But it is Itard, whose teaching strategies survive today in the Montessori Method, that has the most pressing ambivalence. Is he helping a savage become human, or turning a child of the forest into a semi-civilized idiot? The answers don't come easily in this intricate and thought-provoking film." A&E Biography. 1 VHS cassette (50 mins.): color. English, Documentary USA, 1996.

"To some she was a hero. To others she was a symbol of naked ambition. To the world, she remains a legend. Eva Duarte Peron-- Evita--is one of the most controversial figures in history. A minor actress when she married Argentine president-to-be Juan Peron, her political power and prestige eventually equaled, or perhaps eclipsed, his. Was she a power-hungry opportunist, as detractors claim? Or was she really the savior of the working poor? A remarkable program, rare photographs and films tell Evita's real story, from her humble birth to her tragic death from cancer at 33. Close aides and bitter enemies offer firsthand accounts, and popular artists-- including playwright Tim Rice -- consider why she continues to fascinate us today." (from the video jacket)

Judith Gleason. 1 VHS cassette (57 mins.): color. Documentary.

"Flowers for Guadalupe/Flores para Guadalupe explores the importance of the Virgin of Guadalupe as a liberating symbol fro Mexican women today. In the course of this richly textured treatment of an evolving symbol, twent-three women speak out, in traditional testimonio format. This unusual 'contata' of women's voices representing urban, small-town, and rural communities, is intercut with scenes of daily somen's work and celebration of the virgin of Guadalupe in various contexts, including festivities organized by the Comité Guadalupano in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn, New York. Women have been silenced for centuries in Mexico. By focussing on various feminine forms of devotion to the Virgin of Guadalupe as Mexican women's 'role model,' an entire world of consciousness unfolds. It is resilient, hard-working, often painful, violent world, encompassing women of all ages and from various walks of life. They belong to a wider world of popular devotion, historically both exploited and dismissed as unimportant by ecclesiastical authorities who would keep women in a place where they no longer want to be. The documentary follows an all-women's pilgrimage from Queretaro state throgh several arduous but joyful days as it weaves its way through difficult terrain, harsh weather and congested streets to the Virgin's shrine in Mexico Ciety. The songs of Rosa Martha Zarate, Mexico's 'singing nun,' sustains this nad every woman's pilgrimage." (from the video jacket)

Rainer Fassbinder. 1 VHS cassette (123 mins.): color. German with English subtitles, Feature film. West Germany, 1975. Actors: Rainer Fassbinder, Peter Chatel, Karl-Heinz Bohm.

"Fassbinder's films have always been notable for the natural and knowing way in which homosexuality is introduced, but 'Fox and His Friends' is the first Fassbinder film in which it is made the central subject. A lower class carnival entertainer, professionally known as 'Fox the Talking Head,' strikes it rich, after a life of hard knocks, by winning the lottery. His new-found wealth attracts an elegant bourgeois lover, who proceeds to vamp Fox as thoroughly and unthinkingly as Theda Bara. This ill-fated romance between the capitalist and the lottery 'queen' makes for one of Fassbinder's most skillfully wrought films, expertly evoking a brittle, upper-class gay milieu."
