Bidone, Il (The Swindle)
Federico Fellini. 1 VHS cassette (92 mins.) : B&W. Italian with English subtitles. Italy, 1955.

"Academy Award winner Broderick Crawford has the best role of his career as Agusto, the ringleader of a trio of petty con men who impersonate priests and swindle peasants by appealing to their greed. Constantly humiliated by his life, Agusto suffers a crisis of conscience that only leads him to disaster in a shattering climax. Il Bidone begins as an Itlaian comedy of criminal errors but ends as the tragedy of an aging wiseguy who realizes that his lifetime of selfishness has only made his existence meaningless. While its delightful swindles recall the gentle nostalgia of The Sting, there is real sting in its harsh portrayal of greed and squalor. Perhaps the Fellini film that has most in common with literary realists like Gogol or Zola, Il Bidone magically mixes the director's charming satire and insightful character observations with his capacity fr deeply moving pathos." "The story of a young gangster named Michel and played by Belmondo in his first major role, who is in love with a young American in Paris, Patricia (Jean Seberg). The story line is simply and distinctly unoriginal with Michel just having killed a policeman on the highway; he returns to Paris and tries to persuade Patricia to run away with him to Italy. While the plot may be typical enough of the average gangster-type film, the character of Patricia is decidedly complex. In her elliptical manner she manages to evade Michel's pleas to escape with him and his flight is therefore postponed, to his eventual doom. His downfall, however is expedited or perhaps secured by Patricia's merciless betrayal of him to the police." (from the video jacket)

"Nino Manfredi is marvelous in this uproarious comedy about an Italian immigrant working odd jobs in prosperous Switzerland and trying desperately to fit in. Though his work becomes increasingly degrading, he tenaciously refuses to give up and go home. Like Chaplin's beloved tramp, this hapless Everyman is eternally refected, yet ever-hopeful. Bread and Chocolate is a comic but poignant portrait of a man caught between two worlds. Not suited for the society he aspires to, he's also unable to return to the world from which he came." Brel: sa dernière tournée
Claude Vernick. 1 VHS cassette (60 mins.) : color. French, Documentary. France, 1966.

(from the video jacket)

He accidentally kills one of the leaders and is drawn into a doomed affair with the slumlord's sluttish wife, played by Oscar nominee Katy Jurado (High Noon). One of the most compelling dramas of Luis Buñuel's recently rediscovered Mexican career, El Bruto stands as a fascinating companion piece to his early masterpiece Los Olvidados, both unsparing portraits of slum life and the criminal behavior it breeds, rendered with the unique surrealistic vision that is dinstinctively Buñuel's." Cage aux folles, La
Marcello Danon. 1 VHS cassette (99 mins.): color. French with English subtitles, Feature film. France, Italy, 1979. Actors: Ugo Tognazzi, Michel Serrault. "Based on the play by Jean Poiret."

"One of the most successful foreign films ever released in the U.S., this zany, warm- hearted French farce takes on a new dimension presented for the first time on video in its native language! Based on the long-running hit play by Jean Poret, 'La Cage aux Folles' won an Academy Award nomination for 1979 by the National Board of Review and took the Foreign Press Assocation's 'Golden Globe' as Best Picture of the Year. Acclaimed French actor Michel Serrault stars as an aging transvestite, with Ugo Tognazzi (Italy's most popular actor for three decades) as his partner of twnety years. When Tognazzi's son from a one-night stand (he figured he'd try anything once) becomes engaged tot he daughter of a priggish government offical, the couple must pretend to be 'straight.' This leads to a situation 'in which everything you think could go wrong does -- and worse.' (Newsweek) Yet, 'amidst the growing laughter,' adds the Los Angeles Times, 'the film makes its point: Be yourself no matter who or what you are.'"

Camille Claudel
Bruno Nuytten. 1 VHS cassette (159 mins.): color. French with English subtitles, Feature film. France, 1989. Actors: Isabelle Adjani, Gérard Depardieu.

"International screen star Isabelle Adjani (The Story of Adele H., Ishtar) is the creative prodigy Camille Claudel. Gérard Depardieu (Too beautiful for you, Jean de Florette) is the legendary sculptor Rodin. This is the true story of their passionate obsession with art -- and with each other. A historically accurate depiction of one of the most important collaborations in the history of modern art, Camille Claudel was nominated for the 1989 Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, and Adjani was nominated for the 1989 Academy Award for Best Actress for her riveting portrayal of the beautiful young woman who sacrifices her talents to the flames of passion. Both an inspiring saga of artistic vision and the haunting story of a doomed romance, it offers a brilliant study of the thin line separating creativity, passion, and madness. Combining stunning cinematography, powerful performances and a timeless love story, this film is itself a masterpiece." (from the video jacket)

Camus. La Chute
1 VHS cassette : color. French. France, 1988.

Famed choreographer Roland Petit created this dance spectacular, set to Georges Bizet's classic music. This remarkable ballet provides mikhail Baryshnikov with one of his greatest roles, and proves yet again that he is one of the most charismatic and accomplished performers of our time!" Caudillo:The History of the Spanish Civil War
Films for the Humanities. 1 VHS cassette (111 mins.) : BW. English, Documentary. USA, 1991.

"The Spanish Civil War was among the most exhaustively photographed modern bloodbaths, for both sides received not only military assistance, but superb documentary crews from outside. During the final years of the Franco regime, a Spanish filmmaker named Basilio Martín Patino set out to learn what really happened during the war, and why. Working underground and at great personal risk, Patino searched through the archives in Lisbon, Paris, London, Moscow, as well as in Spain; tracked down and interviewed combatants and survivors; and revisited the battlegrounds. There is no editorial commentary in this film, there is no need -- the footage speaks for itself. In the interest of clarity the Loyalist footage is tinted red and the Falangist footage is blue. Patino shows us both sides laughing and singing as they move to the front. The Falangists salute more smartly, but it is really only the tinting of the footage that enables the viewer to tell the combatants apart. After the battle, the footage is black and white as death erases the very distinction for which these Spaniards died." (from the video jacket)

"The First World War is over. All of Europe is a vast graveyard. Against this background of slaughter and destruction, one small personal tragedy would seem to fade to insignificance. Chocolat
Claire Denis. 1 VHS cassette (105 mins.) : color. French with English subtitles, Feature film. France, 1988. Actors: Isaach de Bankole, Giulia Boschi, François Cluzet.

"A number of colonial memoirs have appeared on both big and small screens in recent years, but Claire Denis'Chocolat stands in a class by itself. Based partly on Denis' childhood experiences in the French colonial African country of Camaroon, the story centers on a young French girl; her liberal-minded colonial official father; her beautiful restless mother; and their handsome house servant Protee. A grounded airplane brings a group of outsiders who upset the household's precarious equilibrium, leading to a disturbing conclusion all the more powerful for its complete avoidance of melodrama. An astonishingly complex and subtle first feature, Chocolat (the title punning on French slang for both "black" and "cheated") steers clear of both the syrupy nostalgia of Out of Africa and the spicy exoticism of White Mischief. Denis' first film does not pretend to get inside Africa nor does it romanticize the 'mystery' of the 'dark continent'. Instead it incisively probes the barriers between white and black, and Europe and Africa, defining an impenetrable gap expressed through unspoken tensions, unsettling glances, and unresolved vignettes. By rigorously avoiding the obvious, Denis has created one of the most profound and valid films ever made by a Westerner about the Third World." (African Cinema)

"In City of Women Fellini makes no secret of his obsession with women. Cast again as Fellini's favorite alter-ego, Marcello Mastroianni is brilliant as the Don Juan in a world of modern women. The film opens with a train entering a leaf-framed tunnel -- Fellini's first homage to the erotic metaphors of American movies that have become landmarks of our romantic fantasies. This is the first of many allusions, from Dante to Fred Astaire, which mark this as another great work from the master." (from the video jacket)

But it is Noticias for which he is best known -- the story of the short-lived empire of the Austrian archduke Ferdinand Maximillian, placed on the Mexican throne by the French. In it, del Paso employs superb literary techniques to vividly re-create the historical period by interweaving various narrative types-- letters, straightforward historical narrative, parody, and personal reflection. In this interview, del Paso discusses his writing techniques and the literary influences that contributed to their formation." (from the video jacket)

Derecho de asilo, ElDerecho de asilo, El
Radio television Española. 1 VHS cassette: color. Feature Film, Spanish.

"This humorous and provocative story -- an inventice satire on imaginary (though realistic enough) Caribbean politics -- is both atypical and characteristic of the surreal world of Alejo Carpentier. The protagonist is the Secretary to the President of a small Latin-American country. Our hero arrives at work one morning to find that his government has been replaced by a coup. He manages to escape and seeks asylum at the embassy of another Latin-American country, where his only recourse is to remain for two years until he can become a citizen. He relieves the tedium of his life by becoming a respected advisor to he dim-witted Ambassador of his new country while engaging in an affair with the man's wife. This fascinating and engaging production is an excellent introduction to the absurd and absurdist landscape of Alejo Carpentier." (from the video jacket)

Dernier combat, Le (The Final Combat)
Luc Besson. 1 VHS cassette (93 mins.): BW. French with English subtitles, Feature film. France, 1983. Actors: Pierre Jolivet, Fritz Wepper, Jean Bouise, Jean Reno.

"The Final Combat is a unique science fiction fantasy-adventure that's a bold departure from the norm. The film is a stark vision of a post-holocaust world in which water and women represent status and power, and the few nameless survivors have lost the ability to speak. The main character is simply 'The Man', alone ffigure determined to build an airplane from spare parts. When he succeeds, he finds his way to what remains of his world. Amidst the rubble, he becomes caught up in a raging battle between a savage 'Brute' and a 'Doctor' in the fortified, well-stocked clinic he is steadfasly defending to preserve both his life and his 'secret treasure'. Here is an engrossing study of a man hurled back to his primitive beginnings by his own hand. It is a compelling picture of moment-to-moment survival, marked by off-beat humor, ironic moments and spirited imagination." (from the video jacket)

Deutschland Im Herbst (Germany in Autumn)
Alf Brustellin.1VHS.126 mins.Color and BW. German with English subtitles. Germany,1977. Rainer Werner Fassbinder, Volker Schlöndorff, Heinrich Böll, Edgar Reitz, Alexander Kluge.

"One of the landmark works of the New German Cinema, Germany in Autumn was an unprecedented collective response by Germany's leading directors and writers to the climate of political terrorism in their country in the late 1970's. Throughout the decade, the Red Army Faction (RAF) - an outgrowth of the notorious Badder-Meinhoff Group - had waged a campaign of terror agaunst those in power, and the government's escalating efforts to root out the terrorists had resulted in a virtual state of seige by the Autumn of 1977. Here is an immediate, impassioned response to the events of that Autumn: the RAF kidnapping and murder of industrialist Hans-Martin Schleyer, and the subsequent highly suspicious deaths of three imprisoned Badder-Meinhoff terrorists. The film opens with footage of the Schleyer funeral and closes with the terrorists' funeral." (from the video jacket)

"Alive with the subtle brush strokes of an artist at the top of his form, Bertrand Tavernier's acclaimed A Sunday in the Country is a lovingly photographed and exquisitely acted portrait of French family life on the brink of World War I.

Monsieur Ladmiral (Louis Ducreux) an Impressionist painter by trade, awakens happily one Sunday to meet his son's family for their weekly visit to his Parisian countryside home. Before long, however, a sense of sadness and regret infect the day. Ladmiral is a widower in his twilight years, and the push of time is beginning to strain family relations. Though son Gonzague (Michel Aumont) provides stability and grandchildren, it is daughter Irene who inspires the old man in his meditations about life. Unexpectedly, Irene (Sabine Azema) arrives at the gathering in her fast new car. By the time the afternoon is over, her vibrant spirit shakes the family to its core... and Ladmiral discovers a side of himself he never knew.

Based on the novel by Pierre Bost, A Sunday in the Country becomes an Impressionist painting in itself, a moving picture of the hopes, disappointments, and small joys of family as a father's life reaches its autumn season." (from the DVD jacket)

George Milford. 1 VHS cassette (93 mins.): BW. Spanish with English subtitles, Feature film. Mexico, 1936. Actors: Carlos Villar, Lupita Tovar.

"Filmed simultaneously with the English language version starring Bela Lugosi, the Spanish version of Dracula utilizes the same sets and the identical script. But the similarities end there. This Dracula is a completely different version of the horror classic. Cinematographer George Robinson's fluid camera work and complex depth of focus create a menacing atmosphere. In addition, the sensuality of the vampire maidens adds an unexpected raciness to this timeless tale. The Spanish version features a vibrant cast including Carlos Villarias as the infamous count and the lovely Lupita Tovar as Eva. Here at last is "the other" Dracula, one that many feel is more chilling and evocative than its English language counterpart." (from the video jacket)
